We noted that some Clostridium difficile isolates are nonrecoverable after frozen storage and so used molecular typing analysis to characterize DNA from these strains. The recovery rate of C. difficile PCR ribotype 1 was statistically significantly greater than that of other strains. This observation has implications for C. difficile epidemiological studies.
Clostridium difficile, belonging to ribotype 018 (RT018), is one of the most prevalent genotypes circulating in hospital settings in Italy. Here, we report the draft genome of C. difficile CD8-15 belonging to RT018, isolated from a patient with fatal C. difficile-associated infection.
The influence of long-term ceftriaxone administration on the emergence of Clostridium difficile was studied with 80 patients receiving ceftriaxone for 14 days. In five patients (6.3%) C. difficile was cultured. The appearance of gastrointestinal disturbances during treatment with ceftriaxone was common, but the rate of emergence of C. difficile in immunocompetent patients was not high.
Prevention of Clostridium difficile infection has become extremely important because of increases in its incidence and severity. Unfortunately, efforts at C. difficile infection prevention are hampered by lack of data to support optimal prevention methods, especially for endemic C. difficile infection. Studies are needed to define the optimal prevention practices and to investigate novel preven...
In a large prospective comparison, the illumigene test detected Clostridium difficile in 98% of toxin-positive and 58% of toxin-negative samples confirmed positive by other methods. The Xpert was uniformly sensitive. Most samples with discrepant results had C. difficile concentrations below the illumigene limit of detection. The significance of low-level C. difficile detection needs investigation.
To determine the presence of Clostridium difficile, we sampled cooked and uncooked meat products sold in Tucson, Arizona. Forty-two percent contained toxigenic C. difficile strains (either ribotype 078/toxinotype V [73%] or 027/toxinotype III [NAP1 or NAP1-related; 27%]). These findings indicate that food products may play a role in interspecies C. difficile transmission.
Clostridium difficile can cause inflammatory diarrhoea and colitis by disrupting normal colonic flora. Corticosteroids are effective against diarrhoea associated with inflammatory bowel disease, but their effectiveness in treating inflammatory diarrhoea of C difficile has not been reported. In this preliminary report, we describe the use of corticosteroids in a child with severe C difficile dia...
To determine the incidence of Clostridium difficile infection during 2007, we examined infection in adult inpatient and outpatient members of a managed-care organization. Incidence was 14.9 C. difficile infections per 10,000 patient-years. Extrapolating this rate to US adults, we estimate that 284,875 C. difficile infections occurred during 2007.
BACKGROUND We conducted a systematic review of mathematical models of transmission dynamic of Clostridium difficile infection (CDI) in healthcare settings, to provide an overview of existing models and their assessment of different CDI control strategies. METHODS We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE and Web of Science up to February 3, 2016 for transmission-dynamic models of Clostridium difficile in h...
INTRODUCTION Clostridium difficile infection causes severe diarrhea, abdominal pain and weight loss. A course of metronidazole is the initial treatment; however up to 40% of patients have at least one recurrence. Some patients have recurrent infections requiring further treatment with vancomycin, others need multiple courses of expensive treatment. Fecal transplantation has been proposed as an ...
