In the megadiverse conservation hotspot of the Philippines, biodiversity is not uniformly distributed throughout the archipelago, but hierarchically partitioned into islands and island groups that were conjoined during the mid- to late-Pleistocene. Few species groups are widely distributed throughout the archipelago, but some exceptions exist, such as the common scincid lizards of the Sphenomor...

The genus Dendropsophus is one of the most speciose among Neotropical anurans and its number of described species is increasing. Herein, molecular, morphological, and bioacoustic evidence are combined to assess species limits within D. parviceps, a widely distributed species in the Amazon Basin. Phylogenetic relationships were assessed using 3040 bp sequences of mitochondrial DNA, genes 12S, ND...

Beetles are the most diverse group of animals and are crucial for ecosystem functioning. In many countries, they are well established for environmental impact assessment, but even in the well-studied Central European fauna, species identification can be very difficult. A comprehensive and taxonomically well-curated DNA barcode library could remedy this deficit and could also link hundreds of ye...

Due to limited morphological differentiation, diatoms can be very difficult to identify and cryptic speciation is widespread. There is a need for a narrower species concept if contentious issues such as diatom biodiversities and biogeographies are to be resolved. We assessed the effectiveness of several genes (cox1, rbcL, 18S and ITS rDNA) to distinguish cryptic species within the model 'morpho...

PURPOSE To estimate the population frequencies of all common mitochondrial variants and ancestral haplogroups among 1,999 subjects recruited for the Primary Open-Angle African American Glaucoma Genetics (POAAGG) Study, including 1,217 primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG) cases and 782 controls, and to identify ancestral subpopulations and mitochondrial mutations as potential risk factors for POAG...

In the emerging field of spin-electronics ideal ferromagnetic electron sources would not only possess a high degree of spin polarization, but would also offer control over the magnitude of this polarization. We demonstrate here that a simple scheme can be utilized to control both the magnitude and the sign of the spin polarization of ferromagnetic CoS2, which we probe with a variety of techniqu...

Pressure effect on Curie temperature, dTc/dp, for amorphous Col-,B, alloys is estimated indirectly from forced volume magnetostriction even in Tc > Tcry. Results estimated indirectly show smaller values compared with those measured directly, and are consistent with thermal expansion. The value of dTc/dp extrapolated to Co agrees with that for crystalline Co.
