Four native Papaver species of Iran, i. e. P. glaucum, P. tenuifolium, P. dubium and P. fugax, were collected from their natural habitat and subjected to HPLC analysis for determination of their morphine, codeine and thebaine content. P. dubium and R. glaucum contained all of the three mentioned narcotic alkaloids, while morphine was not found in P. fugax, and P. tenuifolium was free from codeine.
Prostaglandin synthetase activity in rectal biopsy specimens from patients with ulcerative colitis has been shown to fall on treatment with sulphasalazine, local steroids, and codeine phosphate. In vitro studies have shown that sulphasalazine is an inhibitor of prostaglandin synthetase, although less potent than indomethacin, whereas prednisolone and codeine phosphate were inactive. It is sugge...
LITERATURE REVIEW A 2011 evidence-based Clinical Practice Guideline on Tonsillectomy in Children from the American Academy of Otolaryngology–Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) reported that the main morbidity in children following tonsillectomy is pain resulting in decreased oral intake, dysphagia, dehydration, and weight loss. Acetaminophen alone was shown to be as effective as acetaminophen with...
background: several therapeutic effects including anti-asthma and dyspnea have been described for plantago lanceolata . in the present study the antitussive effect of this plant was evaluated. methods: the antitussive effects of aerosols of two different concentrations of soxhlet and macerated ethanolic extracts, codeine and saline were tested by counting the number of coughs produced due to ...
several therapeutic effects including diuretic, anti-pyretic and anti-scurvy have been reported for portulaca oleracea. in previous studies the analgesic, anti-inflammatory, anti-hypertensive, anti-oxidant, muscle relaxant effects and neuropharmacological effects of the aqueous extract of portulaca oleracea have been demonstrated on experimental animals. in the present study the antitussive eff...
Codeine is a prodrug whose analgesic efficacy derives from a 5% to 10% metabolic conversion to the active drug morphine by the polymorphic cytochrome P450 CYP2D6 enzyme system. Among individuals, codeine metabolism varies in proportion to the number and function of gene alleles. Dosing recommendations achieve therapeutic drug exposures in the great majority of the general population, who are “e...
Changes in the chemical structures of morphine and codeine in the presence of hydrogen peroxide, a major component of hair dye and decolorant treatments, were examined with high-performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry (LC/MS). A mixture of morphine and hydrogen peroxide solution, after incubation at 39 degrees C for 24 h, produced two reaction products (hydroxymorphines). When codei...
We used the expression of the immediate-early gene c-fos, a marker of neuronal activation, to localize brainstem neuronal populations functionally related to fictive cough (FC). In decerebrate, paralyzed, and ventilated cats, the level of Fos-like immunoreactivity (FLI) was examined in five groups of animals: (1) controls, sham-operated unstimulated animals; (2) coughing cats, including both an...
