We consider self-propelled particles undergoing run-and-tumble dynamics (as exhibited by E. coli) in one dimension. Building on previous analyses at drift-diffusion level for the one-particle density, we add both interactions and noise, enabling discussion of domain formation by "self-trapping," and other collective phenomena. Mapping onto detailed-balance systems is possible in certain cases.
A theory is provided to analyze the dynamics of delay-coupled pools of spiking neurons based on stability analysis of stationary firing. Transitions between stable and unstable regimes can be predicted by bifurcation analysis of the underlying integral dynamics. Close to the bifurcation point the network exhibits slowly changing activities and allows for slow collective phenomena like continuou...
With self-driving vehicles announced for the 2020s, today’s challenges in Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) lie in problems related to negotiation and decision making in (spontaneously formed) car collectives. Due to the close coupling and interconnectedness of the involved driver-vehicle entities, effects on the local level induced by cognitive capacities, behavioral patterns, and the s...
Collective locomotion is a ubiquitous feature of the natural world, found in living systems great and small – from migrating skin cells to flocks of starlings. In humans, collective locomotion is one form of interpersonal coordination, a term that encompasses many of the social and cultural activities that define our species. Whereas studies of interpersonal coordination often focus on the sync...
Collective human behavior drives a wide range of phenomena in the modern world, from spikes in mobile phone usage1 and online traffic2 to fluctuating demands on transportation3 and emergency response4 infrastructure. However, while the correlated activity of one or two individuals is partially understood5–8, it remains unclear if and how these simple low-order correlations give rise to the comp...
People frequently collaborate to learn and remember information, and this may help groups create a shared representation of the world (i.e., collective memories). However, contrary to intuitions, collaboration also lowers group recall levels. Such impairment occurs regardless of whether people collaborate when first experiencing, or encoding, an event (the collaborative encoding deficit), or wh...
Similar to electromagnetic forces, strong interactions might induce such collective effects as Cherenkov and Mach waves. Their conical structure would be responsible for specific ring-like events. The theoretical and experimental arguments in favor of these phenomena are discussed and their most important features are described.
This paper presents an approach to the annotation of quantification, developed in the context of an ISO project aiming to define standards for semantic annotation. The approach is illustrated for a range of quantification phenomena, including cumulative, collective, and group quantification.
Many naturally occurring phenomena require theoretical treatment utilizing complex analysis by methods such as the Cauchy-Riemann relations using hyper-geometrical spaces which treat inherently nonlinear, non-dispersive, collective nonlocal resonant states of a quantum system, so as to be consistent with the nonlinearity inherent in General Relativity. Typical quantum approaches form linear app...
Using optical model calculations it has recently been shown that refractive phenomena from the collective mean field can significantly alter the sizes inferred from two-pion correlations. We demonstrate that such effects can be accounted for in classical calculations if mean field effects are included.
