Many projects in computational biology lead to the creation of a small application program or collection of scripts that can be of use to other scientists. A natural progression is to make this tool available via a Web site or by creating a service for it, from now on collectively called ‘‘Web resource.’’ We conducted a survey among providers and users of scientific Web resources, as well as a ...

Much has been written about the need for continuing education and training to enable life scientists and computer scientists to manage and exploit the different types of biological data now becoming available. Here we describe the development of an online programme that combines short training courses, so that those who require an educational programme can progress to complete a formal qualific...

Protein networks have a great importance in biological activities. ProteinProtein interaction occurs when two or more proteins interact together to carry out some biological activities. For example signals from the exterior of a cell are mediated to the interior through these interactions. Identification of these interaction have a great significance in understanding complex diseases and also f...

We propose EpiViz, a new visualization tool for genomic and epigenetic data. This tool focuses on the correlation between different types of measurements, as well as different views of the same data, to provide insights over the information contained in the actual data. Nine researchers in computational biology evaluated this application. The positive results suggest its promising early adoption.

Background: The microbial genome sequences provide solid in silico framework for interpretation their drug-like chemical scaffolds biosynthetic potential. The Pseudomonas fluorescens species is metabolically versatile and producing therapeutically important natural products. Objectives: The main objective of the present study was to mine the publically available data of P. fluorescens stra...

DEFINITION Advances in high throughput sequencing and “omics” technologies and the resulting exponential growth in the amount of macromolecular sequence, structure, gene expression measurements, have unleashed a transformation of biology from a data-poor science into an increasingly data-rich science. Despite these advances, biology today, much like physics was before Newton and Leibnitz, has r...

This glossary represents my current best understanding of these notions, and consolidates definitions from my own publications and working notes. Since others have found it useful in several different contexts, I now post it. Many of these definitions are not novel, though I have attempted to clarify the formal mathematical and computational definitions for nonmathematical readers. Similarly, I...

There has been a dramatic increase in the number of completely sequenced bacterial genomes during the past two years as a result of the efforts both of public genome agencies and the pharmaceutical industry. The availability of completely sequenced genomes permits more systematic analyses of genes, evolution and genome function than was otherwise possible. Using computational methods - which ar...
