In Brief This study investigates carbohydrate counting accuracy in patients using insulin through a multiple daily injection regimen or continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion. The average accuracy test score for all patients was 59%. The carbohydrate test in this study can be used to emphasize the importance of carbohydrate counting to patients and to provide ongoing education.
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to assess the efficacy of an insulin priming dose with a continuous insulin infusion versus two continuous infusions without a priming dose. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS This prospective randomized protocol used three insulin therapy methods: 1) load group using a priming dose of 0.07 units of regular insulin per kg body weight followed by a dose of 0.07...
BACKGROUND The objective was to quantify hydrostatic effects on continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) pumps during basal and bolus insulin delivery. METHODS We tested CSII pumps from Medtronic Diabetes (MiniMed 512 and 515), Smiths Medical (Deltec Cozmo 1700), and Insulet (OmniPod) using insulin aspart (Novolog, Novo Nordisk). Pumps were filled and primed per manufacturer's instruct...
The authors aimed to analyze the relation of psychological predictors with medical and psychological therapy success indicators in continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII). Besides blood glucose control as a medical indicator of therapy success (by means of HbA(1c) levels), the authors assessed treatment satisfaction, depressive symptoms, and quality of life among 51 adult patients on CS...
Severe hypertriglyceridemia (SH) represents a therapeutic emergency because of the possibility of developing cardiovascular events and hyperlipemic acute pancreatitis (PA). Most patients with SH suffer primary or genetic abnormality in lipid metabolism in combination with a precipitating factor such as uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, alcoholism, and drug intake. The standard treatment of hypert...
AIM Continuous subcutaneous insulin infusion (CSII) is used as an option in patients with diabetes failing to multiple daily injections (MDI). Psychological factors may play a relevant role in the failure to attain therapeutic goals in patients on MDI. This could lead to an overrepresentation of psychopathology in patients treated with CSII. METHODS A consecutive series of 100 patients with t...
There are various delivery devices available for insulin like syringes, pens, and insulin pumps. Syringes have drawbacks like dosage errors and pain. Insulin pumps can be useful to mimic the physiological insulin secretion. Though the insulin pumps are launched in India a decade ago, they are not popular due to high price and thus there is limited experience and queries with its use. Use of ins...
