In this paper, we present a generic topological and geometrical framework for the digital reconstruction of complex contours from labeled images. The proposed technique is based on combinatorial map simplifications guided by digital straight segments. We illustrate the genericity of the framework with a parallel contour reconstruction algorithm.

In this paper, a novel face segmentation algorithm is proposed based on facial saliency map (FSM) for head-and-shoulder type video application. This method consists of three stages. The first stage is to generate the saliency map of in...

To retrieve models from a data base for recognizing objects in stereo, a new formulation of patches of Dupin's Cyclide provides a succinct representation of surface shape. The parameters can be extracted from the Weingarten Map and its derivatives at a point where a contour meets an extremal boundary.

Mammographic mass segmentation plays an important role in computer-aided diagnosis systems. It is very challenging because masses are always of low contrast with ambiguous margins, connected with the normal tissues, and of various scales and complex shapes. To effectively detect true boundaries of mass regions, we propose a feature embedded vector-valued contour-based level set method with rela...

Novices struggle to interpret maps that show information about continuous dimensions (typically latitude and longitude) layered with information that is inherently continuous but segmented categorically. An example is a topographic map, used in earth science disciplines as well as by hikers, emergency rescue operations, and other endeavors requiring knowledge of terrain. Successful comprehensio...

The stiffness of the aorta can be determined by measuring carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity (PWV(cf)). PWV may also influence the contour of the peripheral pulse, suggesting that contour analysis might be used to assess large artery stiffness. An index of large artery stiffness (SI(DVP)) derived from the digital volume pulse (DVP) measured by transmission of IR light (photoplethysmography) wa...

A Real-Time Photogrammetric Mapping System (RTPMS) is being developed at the U. S. Department of Energy's Remote Sensing Laboratory. The RTPMS integrates a 4k by 4k color digital frame camera, a Position and Orientation System, and an Aerial Survey Control Tool (ASCOT) navigation system, with the newly developed One-Path Photogrammetric Program (OPPP). It automatically processes Digital Elevati...

Surface depressions are abundant in topographically complex landscapes, and they exert significant influences on hydrological, ecological, and biogeochemical processes at local and regional scales. The increasing availability of high-resolution topographical data makes it possible to resolve small surface depressions. By analogy with the reasoning process of a human interpreter to visually reco...

23 24 The mid-level visual cortical area V4 in the primate is thought to be critical for the neural 25 representation of visual shape. Several studies agree that V4 neurons respond to 26 contour features, e.g., convexities and concavities along a shape boundary, that are 27 more complex than the oriented segments encoded by neurons in the primary visual 28 cortex. Here we compare two distinct a...
