Background: Many investigations based on nonlinear methods have been carried out for the research of seizure detection. However, some of these nonlinear measures cannot achieve satisfying performance without considering the basic rhythms of epileptic EEGs. New method: To overcome the defects, this paper proposed a framework on wavelet-based nonlinear features and extreme learning machine (ELM) ...

In the paper we propose, using the logical entropy function, a new kind of entropy in product MV-algebras, namely the logical entropy and its conditional version. Fundamental characteristics of these quantities have been shown and subsequently, the results regarding the logical entropy have been used to define the logical mutual information of experiments in the studied case. In addition, we de...

We review the properties of the generalized entropies in our previous papers in the following way. (1)A generalized Fannes’ inequality is shown by the axiomatically characterized Tsallis entropy. (2)The maximum entropy principles in nonextensive statistical physics are revisited as an application of the Tsallis relative entropy defined for the nonnegative matrices in the framework of matrix ana...

This paper concerns a study of information content in postal address fields for automatic address interpretation. Information provided by a combination of address components and information interaction among components is characterized in terms of Shannon’s entropy. The efficiency of assignment strategies for determining a delivery point code can be compared by the propagation of uncertainty in...

We present an image segmentation approach which is invariant to affine transformation – the result after rescaling the picture remains almost the same as before. Moreover, the algorithm detects automatically the correct number of groups. We show that the method is capable of discovering general shapes as well as small details by the appropriate choice of only two input parameters.

We performed an in depth analysis of the subjects of entropy and the second law of thermodynamics and how they are treated in astrophysical systems. These subjects are retraced historically from the early works on thermodynamics to the modern statistical mechanical approach and analyzed in view of specific practices within the field of astrophysics. As often happens in discussions regarding cos...

In this work we focus on opinion pooling in the finite group of sources introduced in [1]. This approach, heavily exploiting KullbackLeibler divergence (also known as cross-entropy), allows us to combine sources’ opinions given in probabilistic form, i.e. represented by the probability mass function (pmf). However, this approach assumes that sources are equally reliable with no preferences on, ...

We consider here a classical problem of estimating or approximating a density given the information consisting of the values of some of its integrals. The method will have direct applications in many problems of density, spectral density and image analysis which will not be treated in any detail here. One widely used method chooses the density which minimizes a cross entropy functional. We prop...

Shannnon entropy is an efficient tool to measure uncertain information. However, it cannot handle the more uncertain situation when the uncertainty is represented by basic probability assignment (BPA), instead of probability distribution, under the framework of Dempster Shafer evidence theory. To address this issue, a new entropy, named as Deng entropy, is proposed. The proposed Deng entropy is...

The buffer allocation problem (BAP) is a well-known difficult problem in the design of production lines. We present a stochastic algorithm for solving the BAP, based on the cross-entropy method, a new paradigm for stochastic optimization. The algorithm involves the following iterative steps: (a) the generation of buffer allocations according to a certain random mechanism, followed by (b) the mo...
