The many different approaches to exercise testing have hindered the consistent interpretation of hemodynamic, electrocardiographic, and ventilatory gas exchange responses. One of the most influential approaches is the choice of the exercise protocol. Recent data suggest that the protocol can have an important impact on test sensitivity, the reason for test termination, the ST/HR slope calculati...

Ischemia on an exercise test (ET) is a known risk factor for cardiovascular mortality. However, the magnitude of risk of frequent premature ventricular contractions (PVCs) on ET is often overlooked. This analysis reveals that the quantitative additional mortality risk on ET presented by frequent PVCs is similar to ischemia.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS In nomothetic research exercise addiction is studied on the basis of symptoms which are most often linked to exercise volume. However, other factors may also affect individuals' susceptibility to the disorder. The aim of this research was to examine the influence of gender, social context (team or individual sport), and level of athletic training on symptoms of exercise addi...

PURPOSE In this case study, a world-class rower was followed over a period of 15 y in which he evolved from junior to professional athlete. METHODS An incremental exercise test and a 2000-m ergometer test were performed each year in the peak period of the season starting at the age of 16 y. In addition, the training logs of 1 y each as a junior and a senior rower were recorded and analyzed. ...

Maximal bicycle ergometer exercise in an asymptomatic male population, aged 40-65 years, revealed 63 subjects with 'ischaemic' ST changes. The work intensity at the time of appearance of this change was expressed as actual heart rate as a per cent ofmaximum heart rate, and oxygen uptake as a per cent ofmaximal oxygen uptake. If the exercise had been stopped at a target heart 'rate of 85 per cen...

PURPOSE We investigated the associations of cardiovascular and motor performance in grade 1 with academic skills in grades 1-3. METHODS The participants were 6- to 8-yr-old children with complete data in grades 1-2 for 174 children and in grade 3 for 167 children. Maximal workload during exercise test was used as a measure of cardiovascular performance. The shuttle run test (SRT) time, the er...

The influence of maximal exercise testing on state anxiety was examined in three separate studies. Highly trained male distance runners (Study 1, n = 12) as well as college students with average (Study 2, n = 16) and below average (Study 3, n = 32) physical fitness levels completed graded maximal exercise tests. This last group was also randomly assigned to either a control or an 8 week trainin...

Drag area (Ad ) is a primary factor determining aerodynamic resistance during level cycling and is therefore a key determinant of level time trial performance. However, Ad has traditionally been difficult to measure. Our purpose was to determine the value of adding field-measured Ad as a correlate of level cycling time trial performance. In the field, 19 male cyclists performed a level (22.1 km...

The self-paced maximal oxygen uptake (VO2max) test (SPV), which is based on the Borg 6-20 Ratings of Perceived Exertion (RPE) scale, allows participants to self-regulate their exercise intensity during a closed-loop incremental maximal exercise test. As previous research has assessed the utility of the SPV test within laboratory conditions, the purpose to this study was to assess the effect of ...
