In our main result, we establish a formal connection between Lindström quantifiers with respect to regular languages and the double semidirect product of finite monoids with a distinguished set of generators. We use this correspondence to characterize the expressive power of Lindström quantifiers associated with a class of regular languages.

In five studies, the authors examined the effects on cognitive performance of coherence and incoherence between conceptual and experiential sources of affective information. The studies crossed the priming of happy and sad concepts with affective experiences. In different experiments, these included approach or avoidance actions, happy or sad feelings, and happy or sad expressive behaviors. In ...

Emotion regulation has primarily been studied either experimentally or by using retrospective trait questionnaires. Very few studies have investigated emotion regulation in the context in which it is usually deployed, namely, the complexity of everyday life. We address this in the current paper by reporting findings of two experience-sampling studies (Ns = 46 and 95) investigating the use of si...

Those languages currently used in Agent Communication were made to be used by artificial agents only, essentially with the aim of exchanging knowledge. This paper considers mixed multi-agent systems (or communities) composed of human and artificial agents. We put forward an Expressive Conversation-Language that enables agents to form expressive dialogues; mainly deliberative dialogue such as ne...

We show that the bounded fragment of first-order logic and the hybrid language with ‘downarrow’ and ‘at’ operators are equally expressive even with polyadic modalities, but that their ‘positive’ fragments are equally expressive only for unary modalities. §

Logic-based controlled natural languages usually provide some facility for compositional representation, minimally including sentence level coordination and sometimes subordination. These forms of compositional representation are useful for expressing short passages of a few sentences, but compared to natural language they offer only a limited range of expression, and they are unwieldy for expr...

Is it easier to detect angry or happy facial expressions in crowds of faces? The present studies used several variations of the visual search task to assess whether people selectively attend to expressive faces. Contrary to widely cited studies (e.g., Öhman, Lundqvist, & Esteves, 2001) that suggest angry faces "pop out" of crowds, our review of the literature found inconsistent evidence for the...

East Asians and Asian-Americans tend to allocate relatively greater attention to background context compared to European Americans across a variety of cognitive and neural measures. We sought to extend these findings of cultural differences to affective stimuli using the N400, which has been shown to be sensitive to deep processing of affective information. The degree to which Asian-Americans a...

Introduction Childhood is a critical period for language development and maturation of the central auditory system. Unilateral hearing loss (UHL) is considered a minimal impairment, and little is discussed regarding its impact on the development of language, communication, and school performance. Objectives A bibliographical survey of scientific articles published from 2001 to 2011 was performe...
