The applicability of Fenton's oxidation as an advanced treatment for chemical oxygen demand (COD) and color removal from anaerobically treated poultry manure wastewater was investigated. The raw poultry manure wastewater, having a pH of 7.30 (+/-0.2) and a total COD of 12,100 (+/-910) mg/L was first treated in a 15.7 L of pilot-scale up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket (UASB) reactor. The UASB rea...

A novel solvothermal-induced self-assembly approach, using colloid sol as precursor, is developed to construct monolithic 3D metal oxide/GS (graphene sheets) aerogels. During the solvothermal process, graphene oxide (GO) is highly reduced to GS and self-assembles into 3D macroscopic hydrogels, accompanying with in situ transformation of colloid sol to metal oxides. As a proof of concept, Fe2 O3...

A mutation in the malvolio (mvl) gene affects taste behavior in Drosophila melanogaster. The malvolio gene encodes a protein (MVL) that exhibits homology to the mammalian natural resistance-associated macrophage proteins. It is also homologous to the Smf1 protein from Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which we have recently demonstrated to function as a Mn2+/Zn2+ transporter. We proposed that the Droso...

The application of kinetic probes that allow one to determine relative reactivities of biologically relevant substrates with oxidizing intermediates in the Fenton reagent (H2O2 plus Fe2+ in acidic aqueous solution) is described. These results lead to the conclusion that there are two key intermediates with very different reactivity patterns. One (X) is proposed to be an iron complex formed via ...

During the synthesis of an FeBr2 complex with the PNP ligand (R,R,SFc,SFc)-[Fe2(C5H5)2(C38H35NP2)] (1), single crystals of the di-chloro-methane monosolvate of the Br- salt of the protonated ligand 1H+ were obtained serendipitously, i.e. [Fe2(C5H5)2(C38H36NP2)]Br·CH2Cl2. The crystal structure of 1H·Br·CH2Cl2 was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The mean bond lengths in the ferroc...

When rat liver cytosolic P-enolpyruvate carboxykinase is purified, its activity is no longer enhanced by incubation with 30 muM Fe2+. Ferrous ion stimulation of the purified enzyme is restored by the addition of rat liver cytosol. The agent responsible is a cytosolic protein, named P-enolpyruvate carboxykinase ferroactivator, that was readily separated from the enzyme during purification of the...

The identification of metal ion binding sites is important for protein function annotation and the design of new drug molecules. This study presents an effective method of analyzing and identifying the binding residues of metal ions based solely on sequence information. Ten metal ions were extracted from the BioLip database: Zn2+, Cu2+, Fe2+, Fe3+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Mn2+, Na+, K+ and Co2+. The analys...

The in vitro properties of semi-purified chlorophyllase (chlorophyll-chlorophyllido hydrolase, EC 3.1.1.14) from Capsicum annuum fruits have been studied. The enzyme showed an optimum of activity at pH 8.5 and 50 degrees C. Substrate specificity was studied for chlorophyll (Chl) a, Chl b, pheophytin (Phe) a and Phe b, with Km values of 10.70, 4.04, 2.67 and 6.37 microM respectively. Substrate i...

This study examines how Fenton's reagent (Fe2+ and H2O2) decomposed dichlorvos insecticide. Results showed that dichlorvos decomposed in a two-stage reaction. The first stage is a Fe2+/H2O2 reaction in which dichlorvos swiftly decomposed. In the second stage, dichlorvos decomposed somewhat less rapidly, and it is a Fe3+/H2O2 reaction. The detection of ferrous ions also supports the theory of th...
