This study compared the effects of vitreous gel, retrohyaloid fluid and subretinal fluid from diabetic and non-diabetic eyes on the proliferation and migration of retinal microvascular cells in vitro. Intraocular fluids were obtained from eyes undergoing repair of retinal detachment, due either to proliferative diabetic retinopathy or rhegmatogenous retinal detachment associated with a degree o...

In the adult brain, neuroblasts born in the subventricular zone migrate from the walls of the lateral ventricles to the olfactory bulb. How do these cells orient over such a long distance and through complex territories? Here we show that neuroblast migration parallels cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) flow. Beating of ependymal cilia is required for normal CSF flow, concentration gradient formation of...

Impairments in cell migration processes may cause various diseases, among which cancer cell metastasis, tumor angiogenesis, and the disability of immune cells to infiltrate into tumors are prominent ones. Mathematical modeling has been widely used to analyze the cell migration process. Cell migration is a complicated process and requires statistical methods such as random walk for proper analys...

in exploration seismology, migration refers to a multi-channel processing step that attempts to spatially re-position events and improve focusing. before migration, seismic data is usually displayed with traces plotted at the surface location of the receivers and with a vertical time axis. this means that dipping reflections are systematically mispositioned in the lateral coordinate and the ver...

We present a discrete element model for simulating, at the grain scale, gas migration in brine-saturated deformable media. We rigorously account for the presence of two fluids in the pore space by incorporating forces on grains due to pore fluid pressures, and surface tension between fluids. This model, which couples multiphase fluid flow with sediment mechanics, permits investigating the upwar...

Fluid inertia has been used to position microparticles in confined channels because it leads to precise and predictable particle migration across streamlines in a high-throughput manner. To focus particles, typically two inertial effects have been employed: inertial migration of particles in combination with geometry-induced secondary flows. Still, the strong scaling of inertial effects with fl...

Human neutrophils (polymorphonuclear leukocytes [PMNs]) generate inflammatory responses within the joints of gout patients upon encountering monosodium urate (MSU) crystals. Neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) are found abundantly in the synovial fluid of gout patients. The detailed mechanism of MSU crystal-induced NET formation remains unknown. Our goal was to shed light on possible roles of...

The migration of a rigid sphere in a two-dimensional unidirectional shear flow of a second-order fluid was considered by Ho & Leal (1976). It was found that the sphere would migrate in the direction of decreasing absolute shear rate. The present paper extends the previous results to a general quadratic flow, and also considers the case of a spherical drop.

The vertical motion of particles, drops and organisms through density stratified fluids is ubiquitously found in oceans and lakes. Settling dynamics of marine snow particles, rising motion of drops during oil spills, formation of phytoplankton blooms, and diel vertical migration of organisms are just a few of these examples. Transport properties in these examples are modified when the density o...
