A surface-modified polyethylene glycol-conjugated human hemoglobin (MP4) and alpha alpha-cross-linked human hemoglobin (alpha alpha Hb) were used to restore oxygen carrying capacity in conditions of extreme hemodilution (hematocrit 11%) in the hamster window model preparation. Changes in microvascular function were analyzed in terms of effects on capillary pressure and functional capillary dens...

Bilinear flow occurs when fluid is drained from a permeable matrix by producing it through an enclosed fracture of finite conductivity intersecting a well along its axis. The terminology reflects the combination of two approximately linear flow regimes: one in the matrix with flow essentially perpendicular to the fracture, and one along the fracture itself associated with the non-negligible pre...

Subsurface two-phase flow in porous media often takes place in reservoirs with a high ratio between the associated lateral and vertical extent and the lateral and vertical flow time scales. This allows for a two-scale approach with effective quantities for two-dimensional horizontal flow equations obtained from reconstructed hydrostatic vertical pressure and saturation distributions. Here, we d...

There are sex-related differences in venous compliance and capillary filtration in the lower limbs, which to some extent can explain the susceptibility to orthostatic intolerance in young women. With age, venous compliance and capacitance are reduced in men. This study was designed to evaluate age-related changes in venous compliance and capillary filtration in the lower limbs of healthy women....

Modifications which enable simpler operation of the Cunningham-Barth-Kirk microrespirometer are described and an example of its use is quoted. Added advantages include easy positioning of indicator drop in the capillary and thermal equilibration at atmospheric pressure.

Measurements were made of filtration coefficients (Lp), area per unit path length (A/Ax), and equivalent pore radius (rp) in the control state and following severe ischemia (arrested blood flow) for periods of 30 minutes, 1 hour, and 3 hours. The value of A,/Ax for diffusion of all lipid-insoluble substances was not changed after 30 minutes of ischemia, but it was increased after 1 and 3 hours ...

Computational pore-scale network models describe two-phase porous media ̄ow systems by resolving individual interfaces at the pore scale, and tracking these interfaces through the pore network. Coupled with volume averaging techniques, these models can reproduce relationships between measured variables like capillary pressure, saturation, and relative permeability. In addition, these models all...

We propose and analyze a model for sharp fronts in porous media, aiming at an investigation of the capillary pressure. Using the notion of microlocal patterns we analyze the local behavior of the system. Depending on the structure of the local patterns we can derive upscaled equations that characterize the capillary pressure and include the hysteresis effect that is known from the physical system.
