. \ In an earlier paper, it was suqqested that peakinq capacitors such as are used in nuclear electromaqnetic pulse simulators be used to supply the fast current rise times which have been indicated in recent researches in the field of liqhtninq spherics and liqhtninq strikes to aircraft. A more quantitative experimental and analytical study has been undertaken to examine the feasilibiiity and ...

Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) supports full-rate and half-rate calls. In this paper, we propose analytical and simulation models to study the performance of four channel assignment schemes for GSM half-rate and full-rate traac. Our study indicates that among the four schemes, the repacking scheme has the best performance for mixing half-rate and full-rate traac. We also observe ...

Radiation therapy, an increasingly available and effective cancer treatment solution, involves sophisticated machinery as well as careful planning. Interactive 3D simulations combined with accurate 3D patient specific data can improve the planning process saving time and resources in generating the optimal treatment plan. We illustrate the potential of X3D in radiation therapy, specifically rad...

Measurements of flow past simulated sinusoidal hills were taken in an atmospheric boundary layer wind tunnel (ABLWT) that modeled typical full-scale complex terrain for many wind turbine locations in the Altamont Pass, California, USA. Velocity profiles and speed-up factors for several model hills were determined. All hills modeled had the same height and sinusoidal cross-section, and length-to...

The baseline design concept for a seismic isolation component of the proposed “Advanced LIGO” detector upgrade has been developed with proofof-principle experiments and with computer models. It consists of a two-stage in-vacuum active isolation platform that is supported by an external hydraulic actuation stage. Construction is underway for prototype testing of a full-scale preliminary design.

Pressurized pipe networks used for fresh-water distribution can take advantage of recent advances in sensing technologies and data-interpretation to evaluate their performance. In this paper, a leak-detection and a sensor placement methodology are proposed based on leak-scenario falsification. The approach includes modeling and measurement uncertainties during the leak detection process. The pe...

Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom have identified the need for instructional and training solutions that develop the skills of Battalion and Brigade Commanders in formulating situational understanding in order to successfully lead operations in a counterinsurgency environment. In this paper we describe the UrbanSim Learning Package, a game-based instructional software suite...

We present an artificial neural-network(NN-) based smart interface framework for sensors operating in harsh environments. The NN-based sensor can automatically compensate for the nonlinear response characteristics and its nonlinear dependency on the environmental parameters, with high accuracy. To show the potential of the proposed NN-based framework, we provide results of a smart capacitive pr...

We suggest that planning for automated earthmoving operations such as digging a foundation or leveling a mound of soil, be treated at multiple levels. In a system that we have developed, a coarse-level planner is used to tessellate the volume to be excavated into smaller pieces that are sequenced in order to complete the task efficiently. Each of the smaller volumes is treated with a refined pl...

SPICE-compatible equivalent circuits were developed to facilitate the analysis and envelope simulation of electric circuits driven by modulated signals. The circuits are based on a novel complex phasor-domain transformation. The proposed method facilitates simulation of any general linear circuit driven by a modulated signal such as amplitude modulation, frequency modulation, or phase modulatio...
