Seeing that agents of various health and life insurances knock at our doors, or automatically saved voices speak on our answering machines choosing us for the “special private pension offer,” we hardly disagree – we need to think about our retirement funds. A state-related labour agency thinks along the same lines, sending each young, perhaps first-time, employee a proposal of its pension if sh...

GaP terahertz (THz) two-dimensional (2D) photonic crystal (PC) waveguides with line defects were fabricated using inductively-coupled plasma reactive-ion etching (ICP-RIE) in Ar/Cl2 gas chemistries. THz-wave generation from the fabricated PC waveguides was demonstrated under collinear phase-matched difference-frequency generation (DFG), using Cr:Forsterite (Cr:F) lasers as the incident source. ...

We report an experimental study of discrete gap solitons in binary arrays of optical waveguides. We observe self-focusing indicating soliton generation when the inclination angle of an input beam is slightly above the Bragg angle and show that the propagation direction of the emerging gap soliton is influenced by the effect of interband momentum exchange.

It is desirable to further increase the efficiency of turbo machines. In axial flow gas turbine, imprecise axial gap and tip clearance are two significant sources of inefficiency. This work investigates the effect of change in parameters such as axial gap and tip clearance on axial flow gas turbine used in power generation. Different combinations of axial gap and tip clearance have been tested ...

In this section, we will examine how generation gap methods are related to the concept of overlapping and non-overlapping populations in evolutionary algorithms (EAs). We will then review why generation gap methods were designed. We will compare and contrast the generational and steady state systems. Finally we will describe the elitist strategies used in evolutionary algorithms. The concept of...

Ceritinib and other second-generation inhibitors have demonstrated promising anticancer activity in anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-positive non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Specifically, they can overcome resistance due to certain gatekeeper mutations acquired following crizotinib exposure. These agents now provide new options for the management of ALK-positive NSCLC.

This paper describes RevUP which deals with automatically generating gap-fill questions. RevUP consists of 3 parts: Sentence Selection, Gap Selection & Multiple Choice Distractor Selection. To select topicallyimportant sentences from texts, we propose a novel sentence ranking method based on topic distributions obtained from topic models. To select gap-phrases from each selected sentence, we co...

In this paper, we present an automatic question generation system that can generate gap-fill questions for content in a document. Gap-fill questions are fill-in-the-blank questions with multiple choices (one correct answer and three distractors) provided. The system finds the informative sentences from the document and generates gap-fill questions from them by first blanking keys from the sente...

We address the existing gap between business process models and lawful states of business objects. This gap hinders compliance of business process models with internally and externally imposed regulations. Existing modelling methods such as BPMN and ArchiMate lack an explicitly declarative approach for capturing flow of business objects, their states and laws of state transitions. Such deficien...

Detection thresholds for gaps and overlaps, that is acoustic and perceived silences and stretches of overlapping speech in speaker changes, were determined. Subliminal gaps and overlaps were categorized as no-gap-no-overlaps. The established gap and overlap detection thresholds both corresponded to the duration of a long vowel, or about 120 ms. These detection thresholds are valuable for mappin...
