Immunofluorescence studies have been carried out on rashes from 36 patients with rheumatoid arthritis receiving gold therapy. 24 of the rashes were clinically attributed to gold and 12 were diagnosed as coincidental rashes. IgE was found in 6 of the gold rashes and in 4 of the coincidental rashes. Immunofluorescence changes of immune complex vasculitis, lichen planus, or pemphigoid were found i...
Damage of the normal tissue is a serious concenrn in cancer treatment. Hyperthermia by laserhas been considered as a safe cancer treatments methods with lower harmful effects on normaltissues. Using nanoparticles in cancer treatment has improved laser therapy, which is based ona selective cell targeting method to localize cell damages. Metallic nanoparticles such as gold, silver, and copper have...
Gold salts are still the best of all the therapeutic agents used in the treatment of chronic polyarthritis. Complications of varying degrees of severity are encountered in about 50 per cent. of the cases so treated. A mild complication, however, usually causes the patient only slight discomfort, particularly as most often his rheumatic distress simultaneously undergoes rapid alleviation for a s...
This article explores the novel gold nanoparticle-enhanced photodynamic therapy of methylene blue against recalcitrant pathogenic Candida albicans biofilm. Physiochemical (X-ray diffraction, ultraviolet-visible absorption, photon cross-correlation, FTIR, and fluorescence spectroscopy) and electron microscopy techniques were used to characterize gold nanoparticles as well as gold nanoparticle-me...
Although from the time of Koch onwards there had been desultory experiments with a variety of gold preparations in the management of pulmonary tuberculosis, gold as a recognised and accepted treatment did not emerge until 1925. In that year Holger Mollgaard of Copenhagen introduced sanocrysin, a double thiosulphate of gold and sodium, with which he had conducted an extensive series of animal ex...
The purpose of this study was to investigate the potential of gold nanoparticles as radiosensitizer for use in neutron therapy against hepatocellular carcinoma. The hepatocellular carcinoma cells lines Huh7 and HepG2 were irradiated with γ and neutron radiation in the presence or absence of gold nanoparticles. Effects were evaluated by transmission electron microscopy, cell survival, cell cycle...
Gold nanorods have strong surface plasmon band at near-infrared light region, and are used as a photothermal converter. Since the near-infrared light penetrates into tissues deeply, it has been expected as a contrast agent for near infrared light bioimaging, a photosensitizer for photothermal therapy, and functional device for drug delivery system responding to near-infrared light irradiation. ...
Chrysotherapy has now become a recognized form of treatment in rheumatoid arthritis and much experimental work has been done to determine the fate of gold salts in the body. Kling and his colleagues (1939) showed that gold compounds were deposited mainly in reticulo-endothelial cells, of which synovial membrane contains a large number. They were able to detect spectrographically the presence of...
To assess the prevalence of malaria among illegal gold miners in the French Guiana rainforest, we screened 205 miners during May-June 2014. Malaria prevalence was 48.3%; 48.5% of cases were asymptomatic. Patients reported self-medication with artemisinin-based combination therapy. Risk for emergence and spread of artemisinin resistance among gold miners in the rainforest is high.
