Leukocytes form zones of close apposition when they adhere to ligand-coated surfaces. Because plasma proteins are excluded from these contact zones, we have termed them protected zones of adhesion. To determine whether platelets form similar protected zones of adhesion, gel-filtered platelets stimulated with thrombin or ADP were allowed to adhere to fibrinogen- or fibronectin-coated surfaces. T...

In this paper, we present the design and implementation of a sensor network system for monitoring the flow of traffic through temporary construction work zones. As opposed to long-term work zones which are common on highways, short-term or temporary work zones remain active for a few hours or a few days at most. As such, instrumenting temporary work zones with monitoring equipment similar to th...

OBJECTIVE To assess the sizes and configurations of thermal zones after overlapping ablations using a coaxial radiofrequency (RF) electrode and multiple cannulae in ex-vivo bovine liver. MATERIALS AND METHODS For ablation procedures, a coaxial RF electrode and introducer set was used. Employing real-time ultrasound guidance and overlapping techniques in explanted, fresh bovine liver, we creat...

The rate of subduction is larger than the convergence rate along W-directed subduction zones, whereas it is smaller along Eor NE-directed subduction zones. Along Wdirected slabs, the subduction rate is the convergence rate plus the slab retreat rate, which tends to equal the backarc extension rate. Along Eor NE-directed slabs, the subduction rate is decreased by the shortening in the upper plat...

We present some experimental and numerical results based on a simple model designed to give an estimate for the width of a shear zone. We conclude that the observed finite size of the shear zone can be associated with the propagation of the force lines inside the medium. The model, based on a simple argument on the force distribution and dilatancy, predicts a width of about ten grain diameters.

BACKGROUND We present a descriptive and retrospective analysis of revision total hip arthroplasties (THA) using the MRP-TITAN stem (Peter Brehm, Weisendorf, GER) with distal diaphyseal fixation and metaphyseal defect augmentation. Our hypothesis was that the metaphyseal defect augmentation (Impaction Bone Grafting) improves the stem survival. METHODS We retrospectively analyzed the aggregated...

PURPOSE To report the mid-term outcome of a modular, cementless, proximally hydroxyapatitecoated, anatomic femoral stem in total hip arthroplasty (THA). METHODS 160 consecutive patients aged 42 to 92 (mean, 70) years underwent 185 cementless THAs for primary osteoarthritis or femoral neck fractures. All procedures were performed by a single surgeon using the same modular, cementless, proximal...

In this paper, an interval approach is presented to achieve perfect selectivity and maximum sensitivity in distance relay zones, considering uncertainties. For this purpose, first, the uncertainties affecting the settings of the three zones of a distance relay are discussed. Then, by using the Monte-Carlo simulation, the uncertainties are modelled and the impedances seen by the distance relay a...
