We describe for the first time retinal changes in sickle cell/hereditary persistence of fetal haemoglobin syndrome, which is a rare and benign disorder. The changes are qualitatively similar to retinal disease seen with sickle haemoglobin and sickle C haemoglobin, but are mild.

A 90 day study was conducted on twenty four indigenous non-descript goats allocated into four groups. They were fed ad libitum basal complete feed constituted rice straw: rhea (60:40) grass hay and concentrate mixture @ 250/animal/day. Basal complete feed contain 11.07% DCP and 54.21% TDN. Groups were control (T0) basal diet without polyherbal supplementation, treatment 1 (T1) diet with Ruchama...

The urinary metabolites 2-cyanoethylmercapturic acid and 4-aminobiphenyl have been correlated with tobacco smoke exposure. Similarly, 2-cyanoethylvaline and 4-aminobiphenyl haemoglobin adducts have been used as biomarkers of effective dose for the exposure to acrylonitrile and 4-aminobiphenyl, respectively. Each pair of biomarkers is derived from the same parent chemical; however, the correlati...

The blood picture of children with sickle-cell anaemia was found to change with age. The changes were most marked in the first year but the mean level of haemoglobin, haemoglobin F, and target cells fell until adolescence, and irreversibly sickled cells rose. Reticulocytes, Howell Jolly bodies, and normablasts altered little after one year. The fall in haemoglobin F suggested a delayed changeov...

Increased blood glucose in diabetes mellitus stimulates nonenzymatic glycosylation of several proteins, including haemoglobin. Although iron is tightly bound to haemoglobin, it is liberated under specific circumstances yielding free reactive iron. Studies with purified haemoglobin from normal individuals and diabetic patients revealed that concentration of free iron was significantly higher in ...

Between 2000 and 2004, a cross-sectional survey was conducted, as part of a prospective cohort study, among the women attending antenatal-care clinics in Bondo district, a malaria-endemic area of western Kenya. The aim was to assess the prevalence of iron deficiency and determine the predictors of haemoglobin and serum ferritin concentrations in the women who had a gestational age between 14 an...

AIM To identify the optimum age to screen for iron deficiency, the normal distribution of haemoglobin and ferritin in a representative population sample was investigated. METHODS Normal values for haemoglobin and ferritin were measured from heel prick capillary samples obtained from a representative cohort of 1175 infants at 8 months old who were randomly selected from children taking part in...
