If current trends continue, it is likely that the web browser will become the only widely used user interface. Web applications will become the predominant software. Should this happen, user interface design, implementation and evaluation skills can become more focussed and effective. Some of the benefits current browser user interfaces provide are discussed in the context of web application to...
In this paper a novel fusion approach for combining voice and online signature verification will be introduced. While the matching algorithm for the speaker identification modality is based on a single Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) algorithm, the signature verification strategy is based on four different distance measurement functions, combined by multialgorithmic fusion. Together with a feature...
Current evaluation methods are inappropriate for emerging HCI applications. In this paper, we give three examples of these applications and show that traditional evaluation methods fail. We identify trends in HCI development and discuss the issues that arise with evaluation. We aim at achieving increased awareness that evaluation too has to evolve in order to support the emerging trends in HCI ...
In this commentary, we elaborate on the necessity to choose among a wider, higher-level conceptual approach and a more concrete, skills oriented one in HCI education, as a result of HCI enlarging scope and curriculum pressures. First, the role and usefulness of more abstract topics are discussed, and second, some reflections on how to cover them in HCI education are presented.

In massive open online courses (MOOCs), peer grading serves as a critical tool for scaling the grading of complex, openended assignments to courses with tens or hundreds of thousands of students. But despite promising initial trials, it does not always deliver accurate results compared to human experts. In this paper, we develop algorithms for estimating and correcting for grader biases and rel...
This paper presents findings from an experiment evaluating the impact of a pattern structure on the worthiness of design advice. It explores the broader issue whether patterns facilitate communication of design knowledge. This study differs from past rsearch by focusing on the benefits of using a pattern structure on design advice, and not on the efficacy of available patterns in collections. I...
Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) education needs re-thinking. In this paper, we explore how and what creativity and design thinking could contribute with, if included as a part of the HCI curriculum. The findings from courses where design thinking was included, indicate that design thinking contributed to increased focus on innovation and creativity, as well as prevented too early fixation on a...
The shuttle service in tourism depends on physical accessibility of a destination, on movement within the destination and the transport itself. In today’s world, transport is not just the act of getting to a wanted destination. Moreover, travelling by a certain vehicle can be a tourist attraction, if the transportation means is designed to arouse the feeling of joy and excitement. The purpose o...
