The goal of antiviral therapy for chronic hepatitis B is to prevent the development of cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. End points, including viral suppression, alanine aminotransferase normalization, hepatitis B e antigen loss, hepatitis B surface antigen loss, and improvement in liver histology, are used to determine treatment success. Treatment is based on hepatitis B virus (HBV) repl...
The commercial hepatitis B enzyme immunoassay kits of Abbott Laboratories and Organon Teknika were compared for their sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility in detecting the hepatitis B seromarkers hepatitis B surface and e antigens and antibodies to hepatitis B core, e, and surface antigens. With the exception of the Organon kit for antibodies to hepatitis B surface antigen, the specifi...

1. Distinguish among viral hepatitis A, B, C, D, and E’s virology, epidemiology, and serological response to infection and clinical manifestation. 2. Design a prophylactic and therapeutic plan identifying the risk factors associated with the transmission of viral hepatitis A, B, C, D, or E in a clinical situation. 3. Develop an appropriate prophylactic regimen for preventing viral hepatitis A, ...
Elevated levels of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) and its positive correlation with Foxp3 expression in hepatitis E patients have indicated involvement of TGF-β1 in hepatitis E pathogenesis. The current study determined polymorphisms in TGF-β1 gene, plasma TGF-β1 levels and T effector (Teff) cell proliferation and explored their association in a case control study. Polymorphisms in thre...
Acute viral hepatitis is the most common cause of jaundice in pregnancy. The course of most viral hepatitis infections (e.g., hepatitis A, B, C and D) is unaffected by pregnancy, however, a more severe course of viral hepatitis in pregnancy has been observed in patients with hepatitis E. Notwithstanding, opinions differ over the maternal and fetal outcome of pregnancy associated with viral hepa...
Serodiagnosis was done in 93 patients admitted with acute viral hepatitis (AVH) to three teaching hospitals in Lahore. Five (5.4%) had hepatitis A, 39 (41.9%) hepatitis B (2 of these were anti delta positive) [see erratum notice], 44 (47.3%) probable hepatitis E and 3(3.2%) had HAV/HBV co-infection. Antibody to hepatitis C (anti HCV) was detected in 6 patients (6.4%); 2 with HBV and 4 with prob...
The aim of the study was the analysis of the occurrence of specific antibodies against HEV among hunters and foresters who are at risk to be exposed. The study group consisted of 210 hunters (23-80 years old) and 60 foresters (22-64 years old). Anti-HEV IgG were present in 3.81% of the samples of the hunters and in 5% of the samples of the foresters. The statistical analysis shows no significan...

Among hepatitis E virus (HEV) infections diagnosed in 2011 by the French Reference Centre for HEV, 9 were due to genotype 4, which until recently was limited to Asia. Sequences from autochthonous cases formed a single cluster very similar to Belgian swine sequences. Clinical presentation differed from genotype 3 infections.
