Background: The emergence of drug-resistant strains of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) has been increasingly reported. Therefore, attempts to discover new antiviral agents in particular from natural compounds are required. In this study, we evaluated the possible inhibitory effects of hydroalcoholic extract of Sambucus ebulus (S. ebulus) against HSV-1.    Methods: S. ebulus extract was pro...

Although both lactoferrin (Lf), a component of the innate immune system of living organisms, and its N-terminal pepsin cleavage product lactoferricin (Lfcin) have anti-herpes activity, the precise mechanisms by which Lf and Lfcin bring about inhibition of herpes infections are not fully understood. In the present study, experiments were carried out to characterize the activity of bovine Lf and ...

Acyclovir-resistant clinical isolates of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) were analyzed in vitro for their susceptibilities to essential oils of ginger, thyme, hyssop, and sandalwood. All essential oils exhibited high levels of virucidal activity against acyclovir-sensitive strain KOS and acyclovir-resistant HSV-1 clinical isolates and reduced plaque formation significantly.

Although herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) does not induce apoptosis in infected HEp-2 cells, in the presence of cycloheximide infection induced apoptosis with characteristic morphological changes as well as endonucleosomal DNA cleavage. The induction of apoptosis without de novo protein synthesis suggests that a structural protein of the HSV-1 virion is responsible for the observed apoptosis.

Herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and HSV-2) have evolved specific anatomic tropisms and site-dependent rates of reactivation. To determine whether reactivation rates depend on distinct abilities of HSV-1 and -2 to establish latency and to express latency-associated transcripts (LATs), virulent strains of each virus were studied in the guinea pig genital model. Following infection with ...

Herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1) and cytomegalovirus (CMV) are members of the human herpes viridae (HHV) family that can infect give oral manifestations. This case report aims to discuss manifestations HSV-1 CMV infection in a child with cerebral abscess. A 7-year-old boy was referred from Department Pediatrics Oral Medi-cine complaints sore mouth sores, especially when eating, three days ago.Ext...

A new commercial glycoprotein G-based enzyme immunoassay (gG-EIA) was compared with Western blotting (WB) for detection of herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) or HSV-2 type-specific antibodies in 193 serum samples. Sensitivity for HSV-1 was 95%; specificity was 96%. Sensitivity for HSV-2 was 98%; specificity was 97%. Twelve of 13 serum samples with equivocal gG-EIA results were serotyped by WB.

HSV-1 DNA was detected in 32 (30%) of 106 cerebrospinal fluid samples from patients with encephalitis. Cytomegalovirus, varicella-zoster virus, and human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) DNAs were each detected in three patients (3%); herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) and HHV-7 PCRs were negative. HSV detection was associated with seizure (P = 0.02), especially focal seizure (P = 0.0002), and pathologic...

Herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) is a human pathogen that establishes latency in the nucleus of infected neurons in the PNS and the CNS. At the transcriptional level latency is characterized by a quasi-complete silencing of the extrachromosomal viral genome that otherwise expresses more than 80 genes during the lytic cycle. In neurons, latency is anticipated to be the default transcriptional prog...

Following productive, lytic infection in epithelia, herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) establishes a lifelong latent infection in sensory neurons that is interrupted by episodes of reactivation. In order to better understand what triggers this lytic/latent decision in neurons, we set up an organotypic model based on chicken embryonic trigeminal ganglia explants (TGEs) in a double chamber syste...
