Background: Recent studies have suggested the role of herpes viruses in the etiopathogenesis of periodontal disease. Very few studies have explored the role of herpes virus in periodontal disease. The occurrence of herpes viruses may also vary depending on the race of the population studied. Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV 1&2) is frequently detected in gingival crevicular fluid of periodontal pocket...

Genital herpes is a common sexually transmitted disease, affecting more than 400 million persons worldwide. It is caused by herpes simplex virus (HSV) and characterized by lifelong infection and periodic reactivation. A visible outbreak consists of single or clustered vesicles on the genitalia, perineum, buttocks, upper thighs, or perianal areas that ulcerate before resolving. Symptoms of prima...

Brown alga, Turbinaria conoides was successively extracted with n-hexane, cyclohexane, methanol and ethanol:water (1:1). The extracts were evaluated for antibacterial and antifungal activities by disc diffusion method. Minimal inhibitory concentration was determined for active extracts by broth dilution method. The antiviral activity and cytotoxicity of the extracts were tested in human embryon...

BACKGROUND We sought to investigate the arrhythmogenic role, incidence, treatment, and prognosis of inflammatory left ventricular (LV) microaneurysms in patients with apparently idiopathic ventricular tachyarrhythmias. Methods and Results-- We studied 156 consecutive patients (71 men, 85 women; mean age, 44.1+/-11.8 years) with severe ventricular arrhythmias and normal 2D echo cardiac parameter...

Viral infections are the commonest cause of encephalitis, and the purpose of this article is to inform UK clinicians of the presentation, diagnosis and management of viral encephalitis in travellers returning to the UK. The classical presentation is as a triad of fever, headache and altered mental state. There may be other findings either on examination or on imaging which, together with a trav...

Herpes simplex virus mutants PAAr5, AraAr6, AraAr7, AraAr9, and AraAr13, which previously had been shown to be resistant to arabinosyladenine (araA) alone, were found to be resistant to araA in the presence of high concentrations of the adenosine deaminase inhibitor, deoxycoformycin. The marker conferring resistance to araA and deoxycoformycin in mutant PAAr5 was mapped finely to an 0.8-kilobas...

Anal cancer is strongly associated with human papilloma virus (HPV) infection. Using polymerase chain reaction (PCR), the presence of the HPV genome has been identified in 80%–85% of cases. Other important risk factors include human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), immune suppression in transplant recipients and cigarette smoking. Herpes simplex virus (HSV)may play a secondary role in disease prog...

Infection of Wi-38 cells with herpes simplex virus induced an elevated DNA polymerase activity which had many biochemical properties different from normal cell DNA polymerase. Phosphonoacetic acid specifically inhibited the virus-induced DNA polymerase as compared to the normal WI-38 cell DNA polymerase. The compound did not appear to inhibit enzyme activity by interacting with the DNA primer.

The herpes simplex virus DNA polymerase consists of two subunits--a catalytic subunit and an accessory subunit, UL42, that increases processivity. Mutations affecting the extreme C terminus of the catalytic subunit specifically disrupt subunit interactions and ablate virus replication, suggesting that new antiviral drugs could be rationally designed to interfere with polymerase heterodimerizati...
