Fifty patients suffering from KCS and exhibiting various patterns of corneal staining with fluorescein were examined for adenovirus types 3, 7, 8, and 14, herpes simplex, and the TRIC group by tissue culture and immunofluorescein techniques. No viruses were detected by either methods, and it is considered that presumption of virus involvement in these cases is untenable.

Two patients developed reticulum cell sarcomata after they had been treated with azathioprine and prednisone in the course of cadaveric renal transplantation. Both had terminal widespread herpes simplex virus infection.Immunosuppressive therapy could be responsible for an increased risk of malignant lymphomata either directly or by facilitating infection with oncogenic viruses.

Although antitumor activity and a low toxicity profile have been demonstrated for several oncolytic viruses, the development of viral therapy in cancer treatment has been limited by a lack of definitive phase III trials. The use of replicating viruses to potentiate the efficacy of standard cancer therapies also awaits conclusive clinical testing. Based on preliminary results with new generation...

Heparan sulfate (HS) serves as a receptor for adherence of herpes simplex viruses, Chlamydia trachomatis, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and, indirectly, human immunodeficiency virus. Using primary human culture systems, we identified sulfated carbohydrate compounds that resemble HS and competitively inhibit infection by these pathogens. These compounds are candidates for intravaginal formulations for ...

BACKGROUND Central nervous system (CNS) infections are important diseases in both children and adults worldwide. The spectrum of infections is broad, encompassing bacterial/aseptic meningitis and encephalitis. Viruses are regarded as the most common causes of encephalitis and aseptic meningitis. Better understanding of the viral causes of the diseases is of public health importance, in order to...

Herpes simplex virus mutants with single substitutions that decrease DNA binding by the DNA polymerase processivity subunit UL42 are only modestly impaired for viral replication. In this study, recombinant viruses harboring two or four of these mutations were constructed. The more substitutions, the more severe the defects in viral replication and DNA synthesis, suggesting that DNA binding by U...

Filters with well-defined holes were used to determine the effective diameters in buffer of human immunodeficiency virus type 1, herpes simplex virus type 1, and four bacteriophages (phi X174, T7, PRD1, and phi 6), which may serve as surrogate viruses for testing barrier materials. Bacteriophages phi 6 and PRD1 most closely model human immunodeficiency virus type 1 in filtration size.

Bioassay guided purification of the ethyl acetate extract of leaves of Melia azedarach led to the isolation of the limonoid 1-cinnamoyl-3,11-dihydroxymeliacarpin, which showed IC50 values of 6 microM and 20 microM for vesicular stomatitis (VSV) and herpes simplex (HSV-1) viruses, respectively. Its structure was established by spectroscopic methods.

Although herpes zoster is not a reportable condition in the United States, its incidence has been inferred from a variety of studies to range from 3.2 to 4.2 per 1,000 patient-years. This incidence translates into an estimated 1 million cases of herpes zoster annually. Overall, an estimated 32% of persons in the United States will have herpes zoster during their lifetimes. In a recent populatio...

Equine herpesvirus 1 replicated in the brains of 2-week-old mice but did not produce fatal encephalitis; it thus simulated the majority of cases of herpes simplex encephalitis in man. This replication was not inhibited by iododeoxyuridine, although in tissue cultures the equine and human viruses were equally susceptible. The continued use of iododeoxyuridine for human encephalitis should be ser...
