Increasing access and frequency of human immunodeficiency virus testing are critical to stemming the epidemic. In Brazil's concentrated epidemic, human immunodeficiency virus prevalence in the men who have sex with men/transgender population far exceeds that in the general population, but testing rates fall below what is needed to ensure early detection and treatment. Over-the-counter human imm...

Neutralizing antibody (NAb) responses are promising immune effectors for control of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Protective activity and mechanisms of immunodeficiency virus-specific NAbs have been increasingly scrutinized in animals infected with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV), chimeric simian/human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV) and related viruses. Studies on such models...

Filters with well-defined holes were used to determine the effective diameters in buffer of human immunodeficiency virus type 1, herpes simplex virus type 1, and four bacteriophages (phi X174, T7, PRD1, and phi 6), which may serve as surrogate viruses for testing barrier materials. Bacteriophages phi 6 and PRD1 most closely model human immunodeficiency virus type 1 in filtration size.

The human immunodeficiency viruses (HIV -1 and HIV -2), the etiological agents of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), beIong to the lentivirus subfamily of the Retroviridae famiIy. Sequence ana1ysis of viral DNA indicates a separate ancestral lineage for HIV 1 and HIV -2. PhyIogenetic anaIysis of diverse geographical isolates has shown HIV-l to cluster into two distinct major groups...

The advent of potent antiretroviral therapy has altered the expected natural history of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and of many previously associated opportunistic complications, including malignancies. At the same time, HIV suppression has not affected all of these complications equally and the longer expected survival of infected patients may allow the development of newer co...
