We describe the domain of using an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle to find hydrothermal vents located on the sea floor, and explain some of the difficulties in planning in this domain. We also present a simplified model of the domain, and outline a possible approach for on-line plan generation.

This study investigates predation by the vent zoarcid fish Thermarces cerberus through gastrointestinal analyses of 27 specimens collected with the submersible ALVIN at vents at 91500N on the East Pacific Rise. T. cerberus fed most frequently on gastropod mollusks (mainly Lepetodrilus elevatus) and amphipod crustaceans (mainly Ventiella sulfuris). Species found occasionally in high abundance in...

Members of the Thermococcales are anaerobic Archaea belonging to the kingdom Euryarchaea that are studied in many laboratories as model organisms for hyperthermophiles. We describe here a molecular analysis of 86 new Thermococcales isolates collected from six different chimneys of a single hydrothermal field located in the 13 degrees N 104 degrees W segment of the East Pacific ridge at a depth ...

Pyrolobus fumarii Blöchl et al. 1997 is the type species of the genus Pyrolobus, which belongs to the crenarchaeal family Pyrodictiaceae. The species is a facultatively microaerophilic non-motile crenarchaeon. It is of interest because of its isolated phylogenetic location in the tree of life and because it is a hyperthermophilic chemolithoautotroph known as the primary producer of organic matt...

Submarine volcanoes, such as Kolumbo (Santorini, Greece) are natural laboratories for fostering multidisciplinary studies. Their investigation requires the most innovative marine technology together with advanced data analysis. Conductivity and temperature of seawater were recorded directly above Kolumbo's hydrothermal vent system. The respective time series have been analyzed in terms of non-e...

Deep-sea hydrothermal ecosystems are considered oases of life in oceans. Since the discovery of these ecosystems in the late 1970s, many endemic species of Bacteria, Archaea, and other organisms, such as annelids and crabs, have been described. Considerable knowledge has been acquired about the diversity of (micro)organisms in these ecosystems, but the diversity of fungi has not been studied to...

The aim of this study was to determine if polycultures of algae could enhance tolerance to aqueous-phase coproduct (ACP) from hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of algal biomass to produce biocrude. The growth of algal monocultures and polycultures was characterized across a range ACP concentrations and sources. All of the monocultures were either killed or inhibited by 2% ACP, but polycultures of...

The shrimp Mirocaris fortunata is a hydrothermal vent species that is found at most vent-sites along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge. This endemic species is found across a hydrothermal gradient, with thermal conditions ranging from 2-9 degrees C in ambient seawater to fairly warm values of about 25 degrees C. We performed in vivo experiments on M. fortunata specimens originating from different sites an...

Pseudomonas stutzeri strain NF13 was isolated from a water sample taken at a hydrothermal vent in the Galapagos rift. It was selected for its ability to metabolize sulfur compounds and to grow diazotrophically. Here, we report the first draft genome of a member of genomovar 19 of the species.

26 The diversity of culturable yeasts at deep-sea hydrothermal sites has been investigated and 27 raises emerging hints regarding interactions with endemic fauna. Samples were collected 28 during diverse oceanographic cruises at Mid-Atlantic Ridge, South Pacific Basins and East 29 Pacific Rise. A culture collection of thirty-two isolates mostly associated with animals was 30 performed. The phyl...
