Research data management is of the utmost importance in a world where research data is created with an ever increasing amount and rate and with a high variety across all scientific disciplines. This paper especially discusses software engineering challenges stemming from creating a long-living software system. It aims at providing a reference implementation for a federated research data infrast...

The European Alliance against Depression (EAAD) program is to be introduced in The Netherlands from 2017 onwards. This program to combat suicide consists of interventions on four levels: (1) increasing the awareness of suicide by local media campaigns; (2) training local gatekeepers, such as teachers or police officers; (3) targeting high-risk persons in the community; and (4) training and supp...

BACKGROUND The Localities Embracing and Accepting Diversity (LEAD) programme was established to improve the health of ethnic minority communities through the reduction of racial discrimination. Local governments in the state of Victoria, Australia, were at the forefront of LEAD implementation in collaboration with leading state and national organisations. Key aims included expanding the availab...

BACKGROUND Although there is evidence that tailored implementation strategies can be effective, there is little evidence on which methods of tailoring improve the effect. We designed and evaluated five tailored programs (TPs) each consisting of various strategies. The aim of this study was to examine (a) how determinants of practice prioritized in the design phase of the TPs were perceived by h...

We introduce and address the problem of concurrent autonomic management of different non-functional concerns in parallel applications build as a hierarchical composition of behavioural skeletons. We first define the problems arising when multiple concerns are dealt with by independent managers, then we propose a methodology supporting coordinated management, and finally we discuss how autonomic...

Small embedded systems operating in unattended conditions do need to be perpetually powered if a truly pervasive paradigm is envisaged. Harvesting energy from the surrounding environment seems to be the best option. For that, a set of systems has been proposed featuring interesting solutions but not yet capable of overcoming some issues like performance and flexibility. The authors propose a no...

Software parallelization allows an eecient use of available computing power to increase the performance of applications. In a case study we have investigated the parallelization of high-energy physics event reconstruction software in terms of costs (eeort, computing resource requirements), beneets (performance increase), and the feasibility of a systematic parallelization approach. Guidelines f...

GP 2 is an experimental programming language for computing by graph transformation. An initial interpreter for GP 2, written in the functional language Haskell, provides a concise and simply structured reference implementation. Despite its simplicity, the performance of the interpreter is sufficient for the comparative investigation of a range of test programs. It also provides a platform for t...

We present the design and implementation of a card game architecture for mulit-user interactive tabletop surfaces. Our system is built on the DiamondTouch, a touch-sensitive input surface that allows several users to interact with a program at the same time. We describe the software architecture and present Blackjack as a sample implementation using this framework.

The paper describes the concept of Culture Profiles to facilitate globally distributed work groups. The concept describes a representation for cultural characteristics for groups and individuals and relates this concept to existing standards. Hence, it is embedded in the landscape of learning technology standards. A sample implementation for social communities – Culture Clouds – shows the feasi...
