Sub-picosecond electron pulses are desirable for generating femtosecond X-ray pulses. By numerical simulation, it has become clear that racetrack microtron (RTM) has unique features to produce very short electron bunches by itself. In addition, it has proved experimentally that RTM has beneficial characteristics to accelerate only an excellent quality beam in both emittance and energy spread. T...

Abstract The angular momentum Jinc of a light beam can be changed by passage through a slab of crystal. When the beam is incident along the optic axis of a biaxial crystal, which may also possess optical activity (chirality), the final angular momentum J can have both orbital (Jorb) and spin (Jsp) contributions, which we calculate paraxially exactly for arbitrary biaxiality and chirality and in...

We conduct a search for the He − η bound state with the WASAat-COSY facility via the measurement of the excitation function for the reaction dd → He p π−. In first experiment performed in June 2008, we used COSY deuteron beam with a slowly ramped beam momentum corresponding to a variation of the excess energy for the Heη system from -51.4 MeV to 22 MeV. Here we report on the status of the measu...

The study of radiation damage of highmolecular weight substances due to MeV ion interactions is of interest for engineering and scientific applications. In the present study polystyrene (PS) was irradiated with Ag ions of three different charge states (q) 11, 14 and 25 and of 130 MeV energy. The emission of hydrogen from PS was monitored as a function of the incident ion fluence. The experiment...

For ISAC at TRIUMF, radioactive isotopes are generated with a 500 MeV proton beam. The beam power is up to 40 kW and can easily melt the delicate target if too tightly focused. We protect this target by closely monitoring the distribution of the incident proton beam. There is a 3-wire scanner monitor installed near the target; these give the vertical profile and the +45◦ and −45◦ profiles. Our ...

Beams of exotic (radioactive) nuclei are mainly used to obtain new data on exotic nuclei in nuclear reactions. These beams are most easily produced at high energies (> 30 MeV/u) via projectile fragmentation or fusion-evaporation reactions in inverse kinematics due to the high negative Q-value for these reactions. Therefore, the beam ions produced in the reactions also have relatively high energ...

We review recent experiments at the Heidelberg Test Storage Ring which apply advanced laser cooling techniques to stored ion beams. Very high phase-space densities are achieved by threedimensional laser cooling of a coasting 9Be+ beam at 7.3 MeV. Laser-cooled, trapped Cs atoms are used as an ultracold precision target for the study of ion–atom interactions with a 74 MeV beam of 12C6+ ions.

We report on the fabrication of channel waveguides in Nd:YAG ceramics, using either focused proton beam writing (PBW) or He beam writing (HeBW) techniques. Energies of ions used in the writing process were at 1 MeV and 2 MeV, respectively, with different writing fluence. High quality channel waveguides were produced in both H and He implanted regions. Characteristics of the waveguides were expl...

We have modified the single pulse target experimental facility[1] on the Experimental Test Accelerator II (ETAII) to perform the double pulse target experiments to validate the DARHT-II[2, 3] multi-pulse target concept. The 1.15 MeV, 2 kA Snowtron injector will provide the first electron pulse. The 6 MeV, 2 kA ETA-II beam will be used as the probe beam. Our modeling indicates that the ETA-II/Sn...

The neutron deficient Tb nucleus has been studied with the Mo (Fe, αp) reaction at 240-MeV incident energy and the multidetector array GASP. For the yrast πh11/2 decoupled band, excited states up to 6.7 MeV and spin up to 47/2− have been observed. This band presents an upbend at rotational frequency of ~ω = 0.38 MeV due to the alignment of h11/2 protons. The results are discussed in terms of th...
