Basilica is an event-driven software architecture for creating conversational agents as a collection of reusable components. Software engineers and computer scientists can use this general architecture to create increasingly sophisticated conversational agents. We have developed agents based on Basilica that have been used in various application scenarios and foresee that agents build on Basili...

Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS) as defined in IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 are very important for the safety of offshore oil & natural gas installations. SIS typically include the Emergency Shutdown System (ESD) that ensures that process systems return to a safe state in case of undesirable events. Partly as a consequence of the evolving “Integrated Operations” concept, a need is emerging for remo...

The “Model Display view Picking view Controller” model is a refinement of the MVC architecture. It introduces the “Picking View” component, which offloads the need from the controller to analytically compute the picked element. We describe how using the MPDC architecture leads to benefits in terms of modularity and descriptive ability when implementing interactive components. We report on the u...

The development of context-aware applications will require tools that are based on clearly defined models of context and system software architecture. This essay introduces models for each of these, examines the tradeoffs among the different alternatives, and describes a blackboard-based context architecture that is being used in the construction of interactive workspaces.

We present the design and implementation of a card game architecture for mulit-user interactive tabletop surfaces. Our system is built on the DiamondTouch, a touch-sensitive input surface that allows several users to interact with a program at the same time. We describe the software architecture and present Blackjack as a sample implementation using this framework.

The paper discusses a comprehensive, model-based approach for the design and implementation of intelligent controllers. The system has been implemented in the framework of the Multigraph Architecture. The Multigraph Architecture is a layered system, which includes a parallel, graph computation model, the corresponding execution environment, and software tools supporting the interactive, graphic...

An architecture to build software agents for interactive, real-time Multimodal Environments (MEs) is presented. Typical applications include virtual musical instruments, theatrical automation, dancegenerated or –controlled music, intelligent humanmachine interfaces. Agent outputs are produced from agent inputs through three kinds of elaboration: reactive, emotional, and rational. Sensor fusion ...

We present a software architecture that can be used to instrument interactive virtual environments with virtual probes to obtain quantitative information from geometric presentations. This architecture provides tools by which measurements can be obtained from multiple levels of data presentations, ranging from graphically displayed geometry to the underlying raw data sets.

A significant problem of designing 3D virtual worlds (such as metaverses) is developing a scalable architecture that can manage millions of simultaneous users in an interactive 3D environment. This paper presents XPU (Extremely Partitioned Universe), a hierarchical client-server architecture for developing highly scalable metaverses. This design addresses the problem of dynamically partitioning...

We introduce a system architecture for image editing which decouples image filtering from the image size, resulting in a system which allows interactive editing with constant response times, independent of image sizes. Scale invariance means filters are designed to allow scaled rendering from a pre-computed image pyramid, approximating the result of the filter when rendered at full resolution a...
