We analyze the interactions between internal and external control mechanisms in a framework in which the board selects the CEO and then decides whether to retain or dismiss him after observing a signal on his ability. The novel aspect of our paper is that we consider both the hiring and the firing of the CEO by the board. The type of the board is defined by its ability to select a good CEO so t...

The internal model control (IMC) design method for stable plants has enjoyed much popularity due to its simple yet effective procedure. However, there are some shortcomings and inadequacies with the IMC design method for both stable and unstable plants which will be exposed in this paper. We propose a new H∞ control design method that somehow captures the useful properties of the IMC design met...

We study firms’investment in internal control to reduce accounting manipulation. We first show the peer pressure for manipulation: one manager manipulates more if he suspects that reports of peer firms are more likely to be manipulated. As a result, one firm’s investment in internal control has a positive externality on peer firms. It reduces its own manager’s manipulation, which, in turn, miti...

We give a necessary and suÆcient condition so that a system is internally stabilizable and we prove that any system de ned by a transfer matrix with entries in the eld of fractions K = Q(A) of A is internally stabilizable if and only if A is a Pr ufer domain. Hence, if A is a Pr ufer domain which is not a B ezout domain, then there exist some internal stabilizable plants which have no doubly ...

This thesis addresses the problem of combustion control for automotive engines. A method is proposed to complement existing controllers, which use lookup tables based on steady-state operation. During transients, the new control method adjusts fast control variables (ignition or injection time) to compensate for deviations in the cylinder initial conditions from their optimal values due to the ...

This paper considers linear control design for systems with input magnitude saturation. A general anti-windup scheme which optimizes nonlinear performance, applicable to MIMO systems, is developed. Several examples, including an ill-conditioned plant, show that the scheme provides graceful degradation of performance. The attractive features of this scheme are its simplicity and effectiveness.

To understand how animals serially organize complex competing behaviors, we tested pigeons in a sequential task-switching procedure. Daily sessions involved two conditional discrimination tasks that were presented in sequence. In Experiment 1, the first half of a session employed a matching-to-sample task, and the second half tested an oddity-from-sample task. Because the same colors were used ...

The work of independent auditors involves two basic activities—evidence collection and evidence evaluation. Substantial agreement exists concerning the types of evidence that should be collected in particular situations and the appropriate collection techniques. The evidence-evaluation activity, however, is less susceptible to codification. As a result, the auditing profession relies heavily up...
