Mosquitoes collected in northern Italy were screened for flavivirus RNA. Positive amplicons were sequenced and found most similar to insect flavivirus (ISF), Usutu virus (USUV) and surprisingly also to Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). The sequence (167 bp), obtained from one pool of Culex pipiens, was found identical to JEV strains from bats in China. Unfortunately additional sequence data or...
Encephalitic flaviviruses are important arthropod-borne pathogens of humans and other animals. In particular, the recent emergence of the West Nile virus (WNV) and Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) in new geographic areas has caused a considerable public health alert and international concern. Among the experimental in vivo models of WNV and JEV infection, mice and other laboratory rodents are ...
A modified and improved version of the haemadsorption immunosorbent test (HIT) to detect dengue-specific IgM antibodies is described. No significant differences in titres were noted compared to the original HIT and 62.5% of single sera tested were shown to possess IgM antibodies by the modified HIT, as well as most acute-phase sera from secondary dengue infections. Only one acute-phase serum fr...
BACKGROUND Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a mosquito-borne infectious disease caused by Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV). About 1-10 cases with severe central nervous system symptoms have been constantly reported every year in Japan. To clarify the mechanism of maintenance of JEV, the present study surveyed pigs for serological evidence of JEV infection and isolated JEV strains from pigs and mo...
Autoantibodies to the γ-aminobutyric acid receptor, subtype B (GABAB), are a known cause of limbic encephalitis. The spectrum of clinical manifestations attributable to this antibody is not well defined at the present time. Here we present a case of GABAB encephalitis presenting with encephalopathy, status epilepticus, dysautonomia, and acute heart failure. To our knowledge, heart failure and d...
The virulence of genotype I (GI) Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is under debate. We investigated differences in the virulence of GI and GIII JEV by calculating asymptomatic ratios based on serologic studies during GI- and GIII-JEV endemic periods. The results suggested equal virulence of GI and GIII JEV among humans.
A complete genomic sequence of Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) was detected by viral metagenome analysis on aborted piglets. A phylogenetic analysis of this genome reveals that it is highly similar to previously reported India JEV genomes. The complete JEV sequence is 10,718 nucleotides long.
A novel oscillating bioreactor, BelloCell, was successfully applied for the cultivation of Vero cells using serum-free medium, and the production of Japanese encephalitis virus. The BelloCell requires no air sparging, pumping, or agitation, and thus provides a low shear environment. Owing to its simple design, BelloCell is extremely easy to handle and operate. Using this BelloCell (500 ml cultu...
To determine the proportion of acute undifferentiated fevers without neurologic deficits related to infection with Japanese encephalitis (JE) virus, flavivirus serology (dengue and JE) was performed in a cohort of 156 adults presenting to a hospital in Chiangrai, Thailand. Recent flavivirus infection was diagnosed for any individual with an IgM result > 40 units. A ratio of dengue virus IgM to ...
Japanese encephalitis a mosquito transmitted viral disease is a global confront for public health. The disease is a pediatri problem, the seriousness of the disease can be predicted as it mostly affects the children and the survivor are left with ser long term neuropsychiatric problems. Hence the disease is affecting our future generation. The only available option to control JE is vaccination ...
