The dynamics of magnetic reconnection is investigated in a laboratory experiment consisting of two magnetic flux ropes, with currents slightly above the threshold for the kink instability. The evolution features periodic bursts of magnetic reconnection. To diagnose this complex evolution, volumetric three-dimensional data were acquired for both the magnetic and electric fields, allowing key fie...

We present rapid-cadence Transition Region And Coronal Explorer (TRACE) observations which show evidence of a filament eruption from active region NOAA 10696, accompanied by an X2.5 flare, on 2004 November 10. The eruptive filament, which manifests as a fast coronal mass ejection some minutes later, rises as a kinking structure with an apparently exponential growth of height within TRACE’s fiel...

A spatially-discrete sine-Gordon system with some novel features is described. There is a topological or Bogomol'nyi lower bound on the energy of a kink, and an explicit static kink which saturates this bound. There is no Peierls potential barrier, and consequently the motion of a kink is simpler, especially at low speeds. At higher speeds, it radiates and slows down.

In this paper, we present soliton-like solutions of the non-linear complex Klein-Gordon systems in 1+1 dimensions. We will use polar representation to introduce three different soliton-like solutions including, complex kinks (anti-kinks), radiative profiles, and localized wave-packets. Complex kinks (anti-kinks) are topological objects with zero electrical charges. Radiative profiles are object...

This work studies the damped double sine-Gordon equation driven by a biharmonic force, where a parameter lambda controls the existence and the frequency of an internal mode. The role of internal oscillations of the kink width in ratchet dynamics of kink is investigated within the framework of collective coordinate theories. It is found that the ratchet velocity of the kink, when an internal mod...

Using a repeated cross section for married prime age Swedish males for the years 1984, 1986 and 1988 produce drastically different labor supply elasticities. From 1984 to 1988 the Swedish tax system has reduced both tax levels and degree of progressivity, the numbers of kink-points have dropped from 18 to only 3. The numbers of individuals close to or at a kink point have a large influence on t...

Biological filaments such as DNA or bacterial flagella are typically curved in their natural states. To elucidate the interplay of viscous drag, twisting, and bending in the overdamped dynamics of such filaments, we compute the steady-state torsional stress and shape of a rotating rod with a kink. Drag deforms the rod, ultimately extending or folding it depending on the kink angle. For certain ...

We show how detailed properties of a kink in quantum field theory can be extracted from field correlation functions. This makes it possible to study quantum kinks in a fully non-perturbative way using Monte Carlo simulations. We demonstrate this by calculating the kink mass as well as the spectrum and approximate wave functions of its excitations. This way of measuring the kink mass has clear a...

Yellow luminescence (YL) analysis was investigated as a possible route for the screening of as-grown wafers for kink effect in Fe-doped AlGaN/GaN HEMTs, i.e., prior to their final fabrication. This is because the kink effect in the output characteristics of GaN HEMTs has previously been suggested to originate from YL-related defect states. In contrast to earlier works, no direct correlation bet...
