In recent years there has been a surge of interest in the natural language prosessing related to the real world, such as symbol grounding, language generation, and nonlinguistic data search by natural language queries. In order to concentrate on language ambiguities, we propose to use a well-defined “real world,” that is game states. We built a corpus consisting of pairs of sentences and a game...

This paper describes OTTHO (On the Tip of my THOught), a system designed for solving a language game, called Guillotine. The rule of the game is simple: the player observes five words, generally unrelated to each other, and in one minute she has to provide a sixth word, semantically connected to the others. The system performs retrieval from several knowledge sources, such as a dictionary, a se...

General Game Playing (GGP) agents learn strategies to skillfully play a wide variety of games when given only the rules of the game. The rules are provided in a language called Game Description Language (GDL) and specify the initial game setup, what constitutes legal moves and how they update the game state when played, how the game terminates, and what the outcome is. In here we extend this li...

In the context of European Higher Education students face an increasing focus on independent, individual learning-at the expense of face-to-face interaction. Hence learners are, all too often, not provided with enough opportunities to negotiate in the target language. The current case study aims to address this reality by going beyond conventional approaches to provide students with a hybrid ga...

Even though reasoning and, in particular, planning techniques have had a long tradition in Artificial Intelligence, these have only recently been applied to interactive computer games. In this paper we propose the use of READYLOG, a variant of the logic-based action language GOLOG, to build game bots. The language combines features from classical programming languages with decision-theoretic pl...

In this paper, we present the Dialogue Game Execution Platform (DGEP), which is able to process and execute any dialogue game specified in a general description language and build arguments and dialogue histories in the language of the AIF ontology. Thus, DGEP allows us to generalise techniques for generation and investigation of dialogues and, through a set of web services, connect a wide vari...

Abstract Wittgenstein (Philosophical investigations, Basil Blackwell Ltd., 1958) used the notion of a language game to illustrate how is interwoven with action. Here we consider successful linguistic discourse sort he described might emerge in context self-assembling evolutionary game. More specifically, and coordinated action self-assemble two generalized signaling games. The first shows prosp...

This paper introduces the Syntax Game, a language game for exploring the origins of syntactic structure, specifically phrase structure. We define the game and propose a particular strategy for playing it. We show that this strategy leads to the emergence of a phrase structure grammar through the collective invention, adoption, and alignment of culturally established conventions.

In traditional English learning as a second language, learners rarely have the opportunity to practice oral communication, so the acquisition of oral proficiency is a slow process. In this paper, we propose a task-based second language learning game system. The task-based learning method enables learners to obtain communicative skills through the practice of particular “missions” using voice an...
