From 1978 through 1984, we had 151 patients with T1N0M0 glottic carcinoma. They were treated by radiotherapy with 4MV x-ray in parallel opposing field of 5 X 5 cm2 or 6 X 6 cm2. The total dose was 60 Gy/30 fractions/6 weeks. The local control rate was 88.1%, the local recurrence being noted in 18 cases (11.9%). Of these 18 cases, 6 underwent partial laryngectomy, and 10 total laryngectomy. The ...
OBJECTIVE To investigate the dynamics of speech shunt muscle in patients with Pearson near-total laryngectomy by needle electromyography and correlation of ability to activate shunt muscle with speech production. DESIGN AND SETTINGS Prospective study of patients with near-total laryngectomy at 2 hospital-based academic tertiary care centers. PARTICIPANTS AND INTERVENTION Fourteen patients w...
PURPOSE The supracricoid laryngectomies (SCLs) are conservative surgical techniques for the treatment of selected laryngeal carcinomas. The advantage of SCL is that a permanent tracheostoma is not required, thus, maintaining the principal laryngeal functions. The aim of the study is to report objective, subjective, and self-assessment long-term results of voice and swallowing in a large group o...
A retrospective analysis was performed on patients subjected to near-total laryngectomy at Aga Khan University Hospital Karachi from September 2006 and May 2010, to evaluate the functional outcome of Near Total Laryngectomy and its effect on disease control. In all of these advanced stage laryngeal-hypopharyngeal squamous cancer patients, the disease was limited to one side of the larynx-hypoph...

STUDY DESIGN Population-based cohort study. SETTING Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project-Nationwide Inpatient Sample...
OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS To determine the incidence and risk factors of pharyngocutaneous fistula formation in patients undergoing either primary or salvage laryngectomies and evaluate the role of barium esophagram in these patients. STUDY DESIGN Retrospective cohort study. METHODS Medical records of 259 patients who underwent total laryngectomy between 2003 and 2009 at our institution were re...
Surgery is the preferred modality for curative treatment of recurrent laryngeal cancer after failure of nonsurgical treatments. Patients with initial early-stage cancer experiencing recurrence following radiotherapy often have more advanced-stage tumors by the time the recurrence is recognized. About one third of such recurrent cancers are suitable for conservation surgery. Endoscopic resection...
BACKGROUND Early oral feeding for patients who underwent total laryngectomy is still controversial. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of initiating early oral feeding after total laryngectomy regarding pharyngocutaneous fistula. The survey included research in MEDLINE, EMBASE, and LILACS. METHODS The intervention analyzed was early oral feeding (<5 days), whereas the contro...
INTRODUCTION Pharyngocutaneous fistula (PCF) is the most common complication after total laryngectomy. Its incidence is extremely variable, with values ranging from 3% and 65%. The management of this problem considerably increases the length and the cost of hospitalization. The aim of this study is to analyze the incidence, predisposing factors, and outcome of PCF in patients undergoing total l...
