Perforation of the gastrointestinal tract by ingested foreign bodies is rare; the diagnosis of pyogenic liver abscess resulting from such perforations is usually made at post-mortem. We present a case of perforation of the gut, due to an ingested dental plate, with a resultant pyogenic liver abscess, which presented as a pyrexia of unknown origin.
Backgrounds. Pyogenic liver abscess is a rare disease whose management has shifted toward greater use of percutaneous drainage. Surgery still plays a role in treatment, but its indications are not clear. Method. We conducted a retrospective study of pyogenic abscess cases admitted to our university hospital between 1999 and 2010 and assessed the factors potentially associated with surgical trea...
Hepatic abscess is the most common extra intestinal manifestation of amoebiasis. The incidence of liver abscess among cases of intestinal amoebiasis varies from 3-17%. Objective: To study the clinical features and etiological factors of patients with Liver abscess. It is a prospective Hospital based study. Patients admitted to medical wards between the period August 2008 and August 2010 in SVRR...
Fascioliasis is primarily an infection of livestock such as cattle and sheep, caused by the flat, brown liver fluke Fasciola hepatica. Humans are accidental hosts. The diagnosis of infection depends on suspicion. Radiologic findings are specific. Usually, Computed Tomography (CT) and other imaging studies show hypodense migratory lesions of the liver. The development of a chronic liver abscess ...
Neonatal liver abscess is a very rare condition associated with high morbidity and mortality rates. There seems to be an increasing trend of this rare condition amongst the newborns admitted to neonatal intensive care units. We report a case of liver abscess in a premature newborn and briefly review the literature and discuss its management.
Amoebic liver abscess is a common disease, especially in endemic areas, but it is a rare cause of inferior vena cava (IVC) obstruction, with only a few cases appearing in the literature. We report three cases of amoebic liver abscess complicated with obstruction of the IVC and which responded to conservative treatment or radiological intervention.
One hundred patients with liver abscess were studied for clinical features and complications. They were diagnosed by radiography, ultrasonography, serology and by needle aspiration. A variety of interesting clinical, haematological and ultrasonographic findings were observed. Literature on liver abscess was reviewed and results compared.
Treating a pyogenic liver abscess is a therapeutic challenge when a patient presents with atypical symptoms. One of the rare causes of treatment failure of these abscesses is the unrecognised migration of a foreign body from the gastrointestinal tract. The authors describe a pyogenic liver abscess in a 45-year-old male who presented with a 10 day history of fever, and abdominal pain. A CT scan ...
A case of liver abscess caused by Haemophilus parainfluenzae in an otherwise healthy adult is described which responded to medical management without surgery. This we believe to be the first reported case of liver abscess caused by this organism in the English medical literature.
