Background. A recently described selective tibial nerve block at the popliteal crease presents a viable alternative to sciatic nerve block for patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty. In this two-part investigation, we describe the effects of a tibial nerve block at the popliteal crease. Methods. In embalmed cadavers, after the ultrasound-guided dye injection the dissection revealed proxima...
BACKGROUND While chronic neck pain is a common problem in the adult population, with a typical 12-month prevalence of 30%-50%, there is a lack of consensus regarding its causes and treatment. Despite limited evidence, cervical epidural injections are one of the commonly performed nonsurgical interventions in the management of chronic neck pain. METHODS A randomized, double-blind, active, cont...

Introduction: Hemodialysis through creation of arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is an established surgical procedure for patients with End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD). Anesthetic methods management for this surgery should deal with different risk factors such as hypertension, ischemic heart disease and diabetes. Intravenous Regional Anesthesia (IVRA) or Bier block anesthesia as an option for AVF...
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Endovascular treatment of ischemic stroke usually involves recombinant tissue-type plasminogen activator (rtPA)-mediated thrombolysis in anesthetized patients. Paradoxically, differential influences of anesthetic agents on thrombolysis outcome remain unknown. METHODS In situ thrombotic stroke was induced in mice by local injection of thrombin. Four hours after the ische...
To the Editor: 1The review article on ophthalmic regional anesthesia by Nouvellon et al. was engaging, particularly the cadaver photographs elucidating the spread of local anesthetic agent within the orbit as well as the links to supplemental digital content. The authors are to be commended for their comprehensive discourse. However, their assertions regarding akinesia, reproducibility, and reb...
A prospective, double-blind, mixed, crossover study was conducted to determine the perception of pain associated with intradermal lidocaine and chloroprocaine for insertion of an 18-gauge intravenous catheter. A convenience sample of 64 healthy, adult volunteers was used. Each participant received an intradermal injection of lidocaine or chloroprocaine on the dorsum of one hand followed by inse...
Conventional treatment of Bulimia Nervosa is long term, expensive, and often ineffective. Neural therapy holds promise for treating Bulimia Nervosa in a shorter term, lower cost, and more effective manner. Much of neural therapy involves the superficial injection of local anesthetic injections. Implementation into current practice would be feasible.
SUMMARY Sometimes, after local anesthetic injection for surgical procedures of the upper eyelid, it is possible to observe superficial preseptal hematomas or excessive lid swelling that may distort the tissues and obscure surgical landmarks. We present a technique to perform local anesthesia of the upper eyelids, using a 27-gauge needle and a 26-gauge filling cannula, that may decrease the inci...
