BACKGROUND Macrolides are used to treat pneumonia despite increasing antimicrobial resistance. However, the immunomodulatory properties of macrolides may have a favorable effect on pneumonia outcomes. Therefore, we systematically reviewed all studies of macrolide use and mortality among patients hospitalized with community-acquired pneumonia (CAP). METHODS All randomized control trials (RCTs)...

D test is a simple disc diffusion test giving high throughput results. It is used to study the macrolide lincosamide streptogramin resistance (MLSB), both constitutive and inducible as well as macrolide streptogramin resistance (MSB) in Staphylococcus aureus. In this test, erythromycin (macrolide) and clindamycin (lincosamide derivative) discs are placed adjacent to each other over the Mueller ...

Environments polluted by direct discharges of effluents from antibiotic manufacturing are important reservoirs for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which could potentially be transferred to human pathogens. However, our knowledge about the identity and diversity of ARGs in such polluted environments remains limited. We applied functional metagenomics to explore the resistome of two Croatian ...

We thank Dr Medford for his interest in our recent article in CHEST (August 2011). 1 Prior studies by our group demonstrated that direct instillation of either Mycoplasma pneumoniae or recombinant M pneumoniae community-acquired respiratory distress syndrome toxin (rCARDS Tx) causes a lymphocytic perivascular response and eventually induces a robust peribronchial infl ammation in both rodents a...

BACKGROUND Macrolide antibiotics have anti-inflammatory effects, and long-term administration may reduce chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) exacerbations. OBJECTIVE To investigate the effects of long-term treatment of macrolide therapy for COPD. METHODS We searched the PubMed and Embase databases to identify randomized controlled trials that evaluated the effect of macrolide thera...

An efficient directed Claisen reaction between tert-butyl propionate and phenyl propionate is described. This enables a practical synthesis of 6-ethyl-2,2,5-trimethyl-4H-1,3-dioxin-4-one and thereby (Z)-[(4-ethylidene-2,2,5-trimethyl-4H-1,3-dioxin-6-yl)oxy]trimethylsilane, a key building block in our synthesis of macrolide antibiotics. The three-step route elaborated for the preparation of the ...

Concanamycin A, a macrolide antibiotic inhibitor of vacuolar H+-ATPase derived from Streptomyces sp, inhibited Plasmodium falciparum K1 growth in culture with an IC500 value of 0.2 nM. It exhibited an additive effect when tested together with the antimalarial pyronaridine.

The in vitro activity of the new macrolide antibiotic roxithromycin (RU 28965) was compared with the activities of five other orally absorbable antimicrobial agents against 100 clinical isolates of Haemophilus influenzae. Roxithromycin MICs were generally twofold to fourfold higher than those of erythromycin; the MIC for 90% of the strains for roxithromycin was 8 micrograms/ml.

Here, we present the draft genome sequence of Klebsiella pneumoniae subsp. pneumoniae sequence type 512 (ST512) isolated during a KPC-producer outbreak. This strain is resistant to β-lactams, cephalosporins, fluoroquinolones, aminoglycosides, macrolides, tetracyclines, and carbapenems but susceptible to colistin. The ST512-K30BO genome is composed of 289 contigs for 5,392,844 bp with 56.9% G+C ...

Antibiotic treatment for rheumatoid arthritis (RA) commenced in the 1930s with the use of sulfasalazine. Later, tetracyclines were successfully used for the treatment of RA. In double-blind and randomized studies, levofloxacin and macrolide antibiotics (including clarithromycin and roxithromycin) were also shown to be effective in the treatment of RA. There have been several reports in the lite...
