We report that symmetry breaking by a magnetic field can drastically increase the photoluminescence quantum yield of single-walled carbon nanotubes, by as much as a factor of 6, at low temperatures. To explain this we have developed a theoretical model based on field-dependent exciton band structure and the interplay of Coulomb interactions and the Aharonov-Bohm effect. This conclusively explai...

Sheets of graphene and arrays of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWNTs) are formed separately using chemical vapor deposition techniques onto different optimized growth substrates. Techniques of transfer printing provide a route to integration, yielding two terminal devices and transistors in which patterned structures of graphene form the electrodes and the SWNTs arrays serve as the semiconduc...

We have performed transport spectroscopy on individual ropes of single-walled carbon nanotubes. We find that the levels are Zeeman split in a magnetic field, with a g-factor of 2.04 ± 0.05. The observed pattern of peak splittings indicates the parit y of the number of electrons on the dot. In one device there are also signs of the presence of a second dot. We observe features which resemble ant...

Spin-orbit interaction provides a spin filtering effect in carbon nanotube based Cooper pair splitters that allows us to determine spin correlators directly from current measurements. The spin filtering axes are tunable by a global external magnetic field. By a bending of the nanotube, the filtering axes on both sides of the Cooper pair splitter become sufficiently different that a test of enta...

We report interband magneto-optical spectra for single-walled carbon nanotubes in high magnetic fields up to 45 tesla, confirming theoretical predictions that the band structure of a single-walled carbon nanotube is dependent on the magnetic flux phi threading the tube. We have observed field-induced optical anisotropy as well as red shifts and splittings of absorption and photoluminescence pea...

Electronic image states around segmented carbon nanotubes can be confined and shaped along the nanotube axis by engineering the image potential. We show how several such image states can be prepared simultaneously along the same nanotube. The inter-electronic distance can be controlled a priori by engineering tubes of specific geometries. High sensitivity to external electric and magnetic field...

The aim of this article was to study the degeneracy of the energy spectrum in a nanotube under a transverse magnetic field. The massless Dirac-Weyl equation has been used to describe the low energy states of this system. The particular case of a singular magnetic field approximated by Dirac delta distributions is considered. It is shown that, under general symmetry conditions, there is a double...

Relatively low magnetic fields applied parallel to the axis of a chiral single-walled carbon nanotube are found causing large modulations to the p channel or valence band conductance of the nanotube in the Fabry-Perot interference regime. Beating in the Aharonov-Bohm type of interference between two field-induced nondegenerate subbands of spiraling electrons is responsible for the observed modu...

We report on chemically specific, subsurface imaging with high spatial resolution. Using tip-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, we probe carbon nanotubes buried beneath a host dielectric media. We demonstrate our ability to map and resolve specific vibrational modes with 30 nm spatial resolution for dielectric layers with different thicknesses.

We demonstrate that curvature-induced spin-orbit coupling induces a 0-π transition in the Josephson current through a carbon nanotube quantum dot coupled to superconducting leads. In the noninteracting regime, the transition can be tuned by applying a parallel magnetic field near the critical field where orbital states become degenerate. Moreover, the interplay between charging and spin-orbit e...
