Magnetic magnesium alloys can be utilised as a load sensitive material, in which the inverse magnetostrictive effect is used in order to measure the actual loads in structural components manufactured from such lightweight sensor alloys. To achieve a material which exhibits magnetic properties, magnesium is alloyed with ferromagnetic materials like cobalt or samarium-cobalt. In order to improve ...
This paper addresses the development of a unified framework for quantifying hysteresis and constitutive nonlinearities inherent to ferroelectric, ferromagnetic and ferroelastic materials. Because the mechanisms which produce hysteresis vary substantially at the microscopic level, it is more natural to initiate model development at the mesoscopic, or lattice, level where the materials share comm...
In this paper a magnetostrictive material (Terfenol-D) based active vibration control of high amplitude has been proposed. A single link planar flexible manipulator with rotary joint has been modelled using Terfenol-D as smart active material. H-infinity filter is used in the context to estimate the tip deflection (position) and deflection rate (velocity) of the flexible manipulator based on wh...
A variety of extremely high-sensitivity, room-temperature magnetic-field sensors have been fabricated and tested using single-mode fibers in conjunction with highly magnetostrictive metallic glasses. Minimum detectable fields of 5 x 10(-9) Oe/m fiber are reported. The typical characteristics of the fiber magnetometers are summarized.
The fundamental features of the detection of non-stationary undulatory perturbations of metrics based on the interference effects are considered. The advantage of the Aharonov-Bohm effect in superconductors for these purposes in comparison with the ordinary optical interference is demonstrated. Some circuitries of the interferometric detectors in order to be used with SQUID are suggested. The p...
Abstract Correctly torquing bone screws is an important factor in achieving positive patient outcomes during orthopaedic surgery. A torque-limiting smart screwdriver concept has been proposed, and ongoing work being undertaken to model the screwing process allow work. These models require experimental validation, so a test rig was developed. The magnetostrictive torque sensor this affected by m...
