A total synthesis in four steps of racemic paecilocin A, a natural marine phthalide is reported. The synthetic pathway includes an iodine-magnesium exchange followed by condensation on aldehyde and represents sufficiently flexible approach to allow the twelve analogs. synthesized compounds were investigated for their antibacterial activity against methicillin-sensitive Staphylococcus aureus (MS...

Gallium is a trivalent semi-metallic element that has shown antimicrobial activity against several important human pathogens. This antimicrobial activity is likely related to its substitution in important iron-dependent pathways of bacteria. The genus Staphylococcus, which includes human and animal pathogens that cause significant morbidity and mortality, requires iron for growth and colonizati...

The emergence of Staphylococcus strains resistant to methicillin     occurred shortly after the introduction of methicillin into clinical use .    Resistance to methicillin in clinical isolates of Staphylococci has been    explained by the production of a characteristic penicillin-binding protein    (PBP) , designated PBP2a, that has a decrea...

An advanced methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) detection PCR approach targeting SCCmec-orfX along with mecA and mecC was evaluated for S. aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci. The possession of mecA and/or mecC was correctly confirmed in all cases. All methicillin-susceptible S. aureus strains (n = 98; including staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec element [SCCmec] remn...

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a major nosocomial pathogen causing significant morbidity and mortality. The aim of this study was to evaluate in vitro activities of different antibiotics against methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus. MATERIALS AND METHOD The study was conducted over a period of one year (January 2009 - December 2009) in t...

Food-borne intoxication, caused by heat-stable enterotoxins produced by Staphylococcus aureus, causes over 240,000 cases of food-borne illness in the United States annually. Other staphylococci commonly associated with animals may also produce these enterotoxins. Foods may be contaminated by infected food handlers during slaughter and processing of livestock or by cross-contamination during foo...

A total of 15 of 101 (14.8%) nasal methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) isolates exhibited mupirocin resistance (Mup(r)) compared with 1 of 154 (0.6%) methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus isolates. A total of 14 (93%) isolates exhibiting high-level Mup(r) belonged to a single clone. Horizontal plasmid transfer and transmission of Mup(r) strains contribute to a high incide...

Health care-associated infections (HAIs) are caused by microorganisms found in health care centers. Intensive Care Unit (ICU) patients the population that most frequently infected with HAIs. One of common cause HAIs is Staphylococcus aureus. Methicillin-resistant Staplylococcus aureus (MRSA) a strain resistant to ?-lactam. Methicillin-sensitive (MSSA) and MRSA contaminate medical equipments, in...

We evaluated the performance of the ChromID MRSA/ChromID S. aureus biplate for the simultaneous detection of Staphylococcus aureus and methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA) in preoperative screening samples. The sensitivity and specificity were 94.2% and 93.6%, respectively, for the S. aureus compartment and 92.9% and 99.7% for the MRSA compartment after 48 h incubation.

BACKGROUND Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a bacterial pathogen frequently isolated in both hospital and community environments. Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus is considered a major nosocomial pathogen that causes severe morbidity and mortality. OBJECTIVES The main objective of this study was to determine the genotypes of MRSA strains isolated from the nares...
