Quality control ranges were developed for broth microdilution testing of Campylobacter jejuni ATCC 33560 against 14 antimicrobials. Cation-adjusted Mueller-Hinton broth containing 2.5% laked horse blood was the preferred medium, with incubation in a microaerobic atmosphere of 10% CO(2), 5% O(2), and 85% N(2) at 36 degrees C for 48 h or 42 degrees C for 24 h.
Ninety-two isolates belonging to five species of the Sporothrix schenckii complex were tested in vitro against 12 antifungal agents, using a reference microdilution method. There were significant differences among the species; Sporothrix brasiliensis was the species that showed the best response to antifungals, and S. mexicana had the worst response. In general, terbinafine was the most active ...
When the Etest was compared to broth microdilution for susceptibility testing of Streptococcus pneumoniae, levofloxacin, erythromycin, and penicillin results correlated for both methods; azithromycin and clarithromycin showed discrepancies of > or = 2 dilutions for 95.8% and 31.5% of the isolates, respectively. Levofloxacin was active against 141 of 142 isolates (< or = 2.0 micrograms/ml), maki...
Broth microdilution checkerboard techniques based on the methodology of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI) were employed to study the triple antifungal combination of caspofungin, posaconazole, and terbinafine against 27 clinical isolates of Scopulariopsis and Microascus species. Synergy was observed for 26 isolates, whereas antagonism was observed for Scopulariopsis candida...
In vitro susceptibility of 58 isolates of Pichia anomala to five antifungal drugs using two broth microdilution methods (CLSI and EUCAST) was analyzed. Low susceptibility to itraconazole was observed. Fluconazole, voriconazole, amphotericin B, and caspofungin showed good antifungal activity, although relatively high drug concentrations were necessary to inhibit the isolates.
The in vitro activity of the new triazole albaconazole (UR-9825) in comparison with those of flucytosine, fluconazole, ketoconazole, itraconazole, and voriconazole against 70 strains of Malassezia spp. was determined by a microdilution method using a colorimetric indicator for metabolic activity. Albaconazole showed an in vitro profile similar to those of the different antifungals tested (MIC <...

One hundred clinical isolates of Candida albicans were tested for amphotericin B and fluconazole susceptibilities by the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) broth microdilution test at center 1 (C1). The same isolates were tested blinded at center 2 (C2) by NCCLS and flow cytometry (FC) methods. The agreement between NCCLS and FC methods ranged from 96 to 99%.
The in vitro activity of LY303366, a new echinocandin derivative, was evaluated with 191 yeast isolates by a broth microdilution method. The MICs at which 50% of the isolates were inhibited were 0.125 microg/ml for Candida albicans and C. tropicalis, 0.25 microg/ml for C. krusei, C. kefyr, and C. glabrata, and 2.0 microg/ml for C. parapsilosis.
Twelve isolates of Streptococcus pneumoniae with decreased susceptibility by oxacillin screen were susceptible by the FOX panel (Micro Media Systems, Cleveland, Ohio), a commercial microdilution system designed for fastidious organisms. These organisms were found to be moderately susceptible or resistant by broth macrodilution and agar dilution methods. This discrepancy indicates that the FOX p...
