The (salen)Co(III)-catalyzed hydrolytic kinetic resolution (HKR) of terminal epoxides is a bimetallic process with a rate controlled by partitioning between a nucleophilic (salen)Co-OH catalyst and a Lewis acidic (salen)Co-X catalyst. The commonly used (salen)Co-OAc and (salen)Co-Cl precatalysts undergo complete and irreversible counterion addition to epoxide during the course of the epoxide hy...
The use of chiral Ni(II)-salen derivatives was examined in mediated electrohydrocyclization (EHC) reactions. Cyclic voltammetry established the existence of a catalytic current. Bulk electrolysis revealed a slight change in the diastereoselectivity of the cyclizations. Density functional theory (DFT) computational studies showed that Ni(II)-salen and Zn(II)-salen were the best metal-salens for ...
A series of mononuclear Mn(II), Mn(III), and Mn(IV) complexes was prepared using a single tripodal ligand (H(3)L). Addition of a cation (NH(4)(+), K(+), Na(+)) to [Mn(III)L] showed a pronounced effect on the redox potentials. Different variants of Jahn-Teller distortion, axial elongation and compression, were observed in the Mn(III) complexes.
Exploiting carbon dioxide as co-monomer with epoxides in the production of polycarbonates is economically highly attractive. More effective catalysts for this reaction are intensively being sought. To promote better understanding of the catalytic pathways, this study uses density functional theory calculations to elucidate the reaction step of CO2 insertion into cobalt(III)-alkoxide bonds, whic...
We report a manganese-catalyzed aliphatic C-H azidation reaction that can efficiently convert secondary, tertiary, and benzylic C-H bonds to the corresponding azides. The method utilizes aqueous sodium azide solution as the azide source and can be performed under air. Besides its operational simplicity, the potential of this method for late-stage functionalization has been demonstrated by succe...
Ever since Nugent first reported a practical, catalytic method for the enantioselective opening of meso-epoxides with trimethylsilyl azide (TMSN3), [1] such desymmetrization reactions of epoxides and aziridines using a variety of nucleophiles have been the subject of extensive research. The less developed ring-opening reactions, those of meso-aziridines by carbon and nitrogen nucleophiles, give...
The Salen(tBu) ligand and its derivatives were used to prepare binuclear boron complexes. These compounds have the formula, L(BBr2)2 (L = Salpen(tBu) and Salben(tBu)). These are formed from the reaction of the corresponding L[B(OMe)2]2 with BBr3. They represent a new type of binuclear boron compound. These compounds are active towards the dealkylation of many phosphates. They are also catalytic...
We previously reported that μ-oxo N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine iron [Fe(Salen)], a magnetic organic compound, has direct anti-tumor activity, and generates heat in an alternating magnetic field (AMF). We showed that Fe(Salen) nanoparticles are useful for combined hyperthermia-chemotherapy of tongue cancer. Here, we have examined the effect of Fe(Salen) on human glioblastoma (GB). Fe(Sa...
