A self-amplified spontaneous emission (SASE) freeelectron laser (FEL) is under construction at the Advanced Photon Source (APS). Five FEL simulation codes were used in the design phase: GENESIS, GINGER, MEDUSA, RON, and TDA3D. Initial comparisons between each of these independent formulations show good agreement for the parameters of the APS SASE FEL.
The paper describes a monitoring system specially designed for cloud infrastructures. We identify the features that are relevant for the task: scalability, that allows utilization in systems of thousands of nodes, flexibility, to be customized for a large number of applications, openness, to allow the coexistence of user and administration monitoring. We take as a starting point the Nagios moni...
Monitoring and measurement is a fundamental building block for developing and testing new protocols, routing algorithms and networked applications. In a federated virtualized testbed they allow other service components and testbed-users to follow the current state of the network, and on the other hand they enable intelligent automatic decisionmaking, e.g. during the embedding of a virtual topol...
Airborne intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) can provide essential information for both military and civilian applications. Such capabilities are critical for situational awareness, mapping and monitoring, and mission planning. UAVs gather large amounts of video data, but it is extremely labour-intensive for operators to analyse the hours and hours of data collected. At MDA, we ...
It is common for hydrology researchers to collect data using in situ sensors at high frequencies, for extended durations, and with spatial distributions that produce data volumes requiring infrastructure for data storage, management, and sharing. The availability and utility of these data in addressing scientific questions related to water availability, water quality, and natural disasters reli...
Recent technological advances have driven rapid development of DNA-based methods designed to facilitate detection and monitoring of invasive species in aquatic environments. These tools promise to improve on traditional monitoring approaches by enhancing detection sensitivity, reducing analytical turnaround times and monitoring costs, and increasing specificity of target identifications. Howeve...
Open source data from social media platforms is becoming a critical source of intelligence to inform situational awareness in the emergency management domain. However, the use of social media data in emergency management organisations is not yet widespread. This paper reports on findings from four interviews with social media subject matter experts from Australian emergency management organisat...
This paper presents an introduction to structural damage assessment using image processing on real data (non ideal conditions). Our contribution is much more a groundwork than a classical experimental validation. After measuring the bridge dynamic parameter on a small resolution video, we conjointly present advantages and limitations of our method. Finally we introduce several “computer vision”...
The rapid detection and identification of pathogens in infected fish, both clinically and subclinically, and in environmental samples is essential for effective health management in aquaculture. Traditional diagnostic techniques have been very useful for the identification of infectious agents in cultured fish and shellfish; however, they are limited in their speed and sensitivity. For this rea...
