Abstract We present an advanced light-scattering model to retrieve the optical constants of three Martian dust analogs: Johnson Space Center regolith simulant, Enhanced Mojave Mars Simulant, and Global Simulant. The samples are prepared have narrow particle-size distributions within geometric-optics domain. carry out laboratory measurements obtain distributions, shapes, diffuse reflectance spec...

The particle size distribution PSD of lunar dust, the 20 m portion of the regolith, was determined as an initial step in the study of the possible toxicological effects it may have on the human respiratory and pulmonary systems. Utilizing scanning electron microscopy, PSDs were determined for Apollo 11 10084 and 17 70051 dust samples, as well as lunar dust simulant JSC-1Avf. The novel methodolo...

The principle of utilizing a computing program describing precisely the migration of additives from a polymer into a food simulant is presented. The model has been validated with a UV absorber in polypropylene migrating into glyceryl tripelargonate, a pure triglyceride whose behaviour and average molecular weight are similar to Myglyol (a synthetic mixture of C8-C12 triglycerides). Six paramete...

Organophosphorus (OP) nerve agents are potent toxins that inhibit cholinesterases and produce a rapid and lethal cholinergic crisis. Development of protein-based therapeutics is being pursued with the goal of preventing nerve agent toxicity and protecting against the long-term side effects of these agents. The drug-metabolizing enzyme human carboxylesterase 1 (hCE1) is a candidate protein-based...

A new cyanine dye (CYD) based on hybrid hydroxynaphthalene-hemicyanine has been synthesized and characterized. The chromogenic and ratiometric fluorogenic probe (CYD) enables a fast and highly sensitive response to an OP nerve agent mimic diethyl chlorophosphate (DCP) through tandem phosphorylation and intramolecular cyclization reaction within 1 min and with the detection limit as low as 18.86...

The synthesis of nano-sized particles of NU-1000 (length from 75 nm to 1200 nm) and PCN-222/MOF-545 (length from 350 nm to 900 nm) is reported. The catalytic hydrolysis of methyl paraoxon was investigated as a function of NU-1000 crystallite size and a significant enhancement in the rate was observed for the nano-sized crystals compared to microcrystals.

A FRET approach towards potential detection of phosgene is presented, which is based on a selective chemical reaction between phosgene (or triphosgene as a simulant) and donor and acceptor fluorophores.

Previous studies have demonstrated that rapid evacuation, disrobing and emergency decontamination can enhance the ability of emergency services and acute hospitals to effectively manage chemically-contaminated casualties. The purpose of this human volunteer study was to further optimise such an "Initial Operational Response" by (1) identifying an appropriate method for performing improvised ski...

Optic nerve head drusen can be associated with peripapillary choroidal neovascularization, in both the pediatric and adult population. These membranes can involve the macula, causing significant visual loss. Herein, we present a case that required treatment with an anti-VEGF agent. The patient failed to respond to the initial agent, but subsequently responded to a change of agent. Adult patient...

Several methods for the bioanalysis of nerve agents or their metabolites have been developed for the verification of nerve agent exposure. However, parent nerve agents and known metabolites are generally rapidly excreted from biological matrixes typically used for analysis (i.e., blood, urine, and tissues), limiting the amount of time after an exposure that verification is feasible. In this stu...
