Optical limiting behaviour of suspensions of single-walled carbon nanotubes in water, ethanol and ethylene glycol is reported. Experiments with 532 nm, 15 nsec duration laser pulses show that optical limiting occurs mainly due to nonlinear scattering. We study, both theoretically and experimentally, the Bragg scattering of light in optically induced photonic lattices and reveal the key physical mechanisms which govern the nonlinear self-action of narrow beams under the combined effects of Bragg scattering and wave diffraction, allowing for selecting bands with different effective dispersion.

We study the inverse scattering problem for the three dimensional nonlinear Schrödinger equation with the Yukawa potential. The nonlinearity of the equation is nonlocal. We reconstruct the potential and the nonlinearity by the knowledge of the scattering states. Our result is applicable to reconstructing the nonlinearity of the semi-relativistic Hartree equation.

A one-dimensional generalized nonlinear Schrödinger equation is considered, and the corresponding inverse scattering problem is analyzed when the potential is compactly supported and depends on the wave function. The unique recovery of the potential is established from an appropriate set of scattering data.

We demonstrate experimentally that a wide control of the group velocity of light can be achieved in conventional optical fibers by use of the stimulated Brillouin scattering effect.
