Cord formation is a characteristic property of the cultured Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex species. We describe a case of Mycobacterium marinum demonstrating robust cord formation. Nontuberculous mycobacteria can form true cords in broth culture but do so rarely, despite the fact that many species contain the cell wall glycolipid that mediates cord formation.

Mycobacteriosis is on the increase. Nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) are resistant to most antituberculosis drugs naturally. We determined the complete genome sequence of a novel NTM strain, JDM601, of the Mycobacterium terrae complex, which was isolated from a patient with tuberculosis-like disease and with various antibiotic resistances.

To investigate the occurrence of the Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) polymorphisms in patients with pulmonary disease caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), TLR2 Arg677Trp and Arg753Gln polymorphisms were examined. TLR2 polymorphisms do not appear to be responsible for host susceptibility to NTM lung disease, at least in the Korean population.

Six methods of decontamination each for the isolation of mycobacteria from soil and water were compared. On the basis of the results obtained, three of the six methods for soil and two of the six methods for water were further evaluated. For both soil and water samples, the method using 3% sodium lauryl sulfate in combination with 1% NaOH yielded more positives than the other methods.

Mycobacterium avium accounts for most lung disease caused by nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM). The lack of effective chemotherapy calls for the discovery of new drugs. Here, we report the draft genome sequence of M. avium 11, a clinical isolate used as a screening strain for NTM-focused drug discovery.

Atypical mycobacteria (209 strains) were examined for susceptibility to rifampin by the proportion method by using Middlebrook 7H-10 agar. All strains of Mycobacterium kansasii and tap-water scotochromogens were inhibited by 0.25 to 1 mug of the drug per ml. Seventy-six per cent of M. scrofulaceum and 61% of M. intracellulare strains were susceptible to 4 mug/ml or less; 5% of the former and 8%...

Mycobacterium abscessus is a ubiquitous, rapidly growing species of nontuberculous mycobacteria that colonizes organic surfaces and is frequently associated with opportunistic infections in humans. We report here the draft genome sequence of Mycobacterium abscessus strain M139, which shows genomic features reported to be characteristic of both Mycobacterium abscessus subsp. abscessus and Mycoba...

Mycobacterium kansasii belongs to the nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) and causes opportunistic infections with both pulmonary and extrapulmonary manifestations. Here, we report the draft genome sequences of six environmental M. kansasii strains, designated 1010001495 (type I), 1010001469 (type II), 1010001468 (type III), 1010001458 (type IV), 1010001454 (type V), and 1010001493 (type V), orig...

The BACTEC Mycobacteria Growth Indicator Tube 960 (MGIT 960) system was applied for recovery of mycobacteria from extrapulmonary specimens and compared with solid media (Löwenstein-Jensen and Stonebrink). A total of 9,558 specimens were investigated, comprising 3,074 body fluids, 1,878 tissues, and 2,069 urine samples, from which the recovery of mycobacteria was not yet established for MGIT 960...

We report the case of a 35-year-old man with a chronic ulceration of the hand in whom an infection with Mycobacterium marinum was diagnosed. Clarithromycin and doxycycline were prescribed, resulting in a slow resolution of the ulceration. M. marinum is a nontuberculous mycobacterium that causes skin lesions such as nodules, ulcerations, and sporotrichoid spread, but may also be responsible for ...
