A new family of belt-shaped carbon structures, called Escherynes, is theoretically proposed using the octadehydro annulene (ODA) skeleton as a building block. Several ODA rings are fused together and cyclized to form belt-structures. Two isomeric forms of the Escherynes are considered, Hückel and Möbius. We demonstrate that these compounds have thermodynamical and kinetic stabilities comparable...

Detailed practical and numerical information is provided for undertaking and evaluating absolute-structure and absolute-con®guration determinations. The interpretation of numerical values of x, the Flack [Acta Cryst. (1983), A39, 876± 881] parameter, and its standard uncertainty u are explained in terms of the inversion-distinguishing power. Moreover, the conditions to obtain reliable values of...

The region of SGR 1806-20 localization was observed during its gamma-ray activity in 2001. The observations have been performed on the 6-meter telescope of the Special Astrophysical Observatory, using the Panoramic Photometer-Polarimeter (PPP). The search for variability was performed on the 10 10 s time scale, and its results were compared to the properties of corresponding x-ray flares.

Interactions which do not conserve parity might influence chiral compounds giving rise to a parity violating energy difference (PVED) that might have affected the evolution towards homochirality. However, this tiny effect predicted by electroweak-quantum chemistry calculations is easily masked by thermal effects, making it desirable to reach cold regimes in the laboratory. As an alternative rou...

The optical properties of cholesteric and chiral smectic liquid crystals are studied, in the limit of pitch smaller than the wavelength of visible light, by means of a formalism borrowing techniques developed to explain form birefringence effects in particulate media. The behaviour of actual stratified anisotropic substances is shown to be accurately approximated, in this limit, by an effective...

The optical rotation of a buffered glucose solution upon bromine oxidation rises to a point which corresponds approximately with the rotation of the delta gluconic lactone; then the rotation decreases to a minimum value at a rate corresponding to the hydrolysis of the delta lactone; and finally the rotation slowly increases to a point corresponding to the equilibrium rotation of gluconic acid. ...

The characterization of global energy storage and release in the coupled solar wind-magnetosphere system remains one of the fundamental problems of space physics. Recently, it has been realised that a new paradigm in physics, that of Self Organised Criticality (SOC) may encapsulate the mixing and merging of flux on many scales in the magnetotail prompting bursty energy release and reconfigurati...

A novel π-conjugated organoboron polymer with a chiral side chain was prepared by way of hydroboration polymerization between an optically active diyne monomer and triisopropylphenylborane. The achiral analog of this organoboron polymer was also prepared as reference material. Optical properties and optical activity were investigated by UV–vis absorption, fluorescence emission, and circular dic...

A new mathematical formalism, based on a coupled-mode approach, is presented to describe light propagation in birefringent optically active crystals. An arbitrary light wave in the medium is represented as an expansion in terms of linearly polarized eigenmodes; explicit solutions of the equations for the coupled-wave amplitudes show how power is transferred between the principal components in t...
