This short review will address the potential uses for quantitative analyses of organ function in the critically ill patient. Multiple system failure is common in the critical-care unit, and the ability to measure reserves of organ function may enable earlier detection and treatment of this problem and provide a more accurate prognosis for such patients.
The syndrome of multiple organ failure has been recognised as a distinc t entity since the 1970s, and is the leading cause of mortality in intensive care1. It was subsequently appreciated that patients develop a spectrum of organ dysfunction which may or may not require pharmacological (eg inotropic) or mechanical (eg ventilation) support. This led to the coining of a new syndrome, multi-organ ...
This tutorial describes sources of pharmacokinetic variability that are not obviously linked to genetic differences. The sources of variability are therefore described as environmental. The major quantitative sources of environmental variability are body size (including body composition), maturation and organ function. Size should be considered in all patients. Maturation is mainly relevant to ...
The septal organ, a distinct chemosensory organ observed in the mammalian nose, is essentially a small island of olfactory neuroepithelium located bilaterally at the ventral base of the nasal septum. Virtually nothing is known about its physiological properties and function. To understand the nature of the sensory neurons in this area, we studied the mechanisms underlying olfactory signal trans...
With improved survival rates in solid organ transplantation there has been an increased focus on long-term outcomes following transplant, including physical function, health-related quality-of-life and cardiovascular mortality. Exercise training has the potential to affect these outcomes, however, research on the optimal timing, type, dose of exercise, mode of delivery and relevant outcomes is ...
normal 0 false false false en-us x-none ar-sa background: acute kidney injury (aki) is commonly occurred in intensive care unit (icu) patients. the aim of the study was a comparison of rifle (risk of renal injury/injury to the kidney/failure of kidney function/loss of kidney function/end stage disease) classification with other scoring systems in the evaluation of aki in icus. materials and met...
Council for Donation and Transplantation (CCDT) sponsored a forum entitled " Medical Management to Optimize Donor Organ Potential, " 23–25 Feb. 2004, to develop guidelines and recommendations for organ donor management in Canada. Discussions were restricted to the interval of care that begins with neurological determination of death (NDD), commonly called " brain death, " and consent to organ d...
3D organ buds that can recapitulate organ function have myriad applications for regenerative and personalized medicine. Here, Takebe et al. (2015) describe a generalized method for organ bud formation, demonstrating that mechanosensitive mesenchymal stem cells drive condensation of heterotypic cell mixtures to create buds from diverse organs.
conclusions this study shows that an adequate nutritional support, in patients with severe burn injury, can improve sofa score. it is also more cost-effective, resulting in a shorter los in hospital. background severe burned patients developed metabolic imbalances and systemic inflammatory response syndrome (sirs), which can lead to malnutrition, impaired immunologic response, multiple organ fa...
