Evolutionary costs of parasite resistance arise if genes conferring resistance reduce fitness in the absence of parasites. Thus, parasite-mediated selection may lead to increased resistance and a correlated decrease in fitness, whereas relaxed parasite-mediated selection may lead to reverse evolution of increased fitness and a correlated decrease in resistance. We tested this idea in experiment...

Nuclear differentiation in exconjugants of Paramecium caudatum is closely associated with a brief localization of the postzygotic nuclei near the opposite ends of the cell, with the germinal nucleus (micronucleus) in the anterior region and the somatic nuclei (macronuclei) in the posterior region. The posterior nuclei cannot regenerate to produce micronuclei when all four anterior nuclei are re...

Irradiation of the gametophytes of Pteridium aquilinum with blue light led to a nearly 5-fold increase in the amino acid-incorporating activity of isolated chloroplasts. The blue light effect was not due to increased synthesis of ATP or other energy donors by the chloroplasts but was probably related to an increased production of chlorophyll and photosynthetic enzymes.

It has been known for many years that electric currents flowing through a suspension of Paramecium modify the beating characteristics of the cilia in such a way that the organisms turn and move towards the cathode (Ludloff, 1895; Jennings, 1906). Jahn (1961) has accounted for this behaviour by supposing that current flows through the cell membrane and either enhances or reverses the normal cili...

The short-term incorporation of tritiated thymidine into the cytoplasm of cells undergoing oogenesis was investigated in Pteridium aquilinum using electron-microscope autoradiography. There was substantial uptake into the central cell and egg cell during the 6-h labelling period. The quantity and distribution of the label incorporated into the cytoplasm were closely similar in cells fixed immed...

The membrane potential responses of Paramecium caudatum to the external application of bitter substances were examined by employing conventional electrophysiological techniques. Mutant cells defective in voltage-gated Ca2+ channels were used to record the potential responses in the absence of contamination by Ca2+ action potentials. The cells produced a transient depolarization followed by a tr...
