Adult and immature individuals of many insect species can survive anaerobic conditions for periods ranging from 4 hr. to 4 days, and even in a few cases for longer periods up to 56 days (see Brand, 1946, for numerous references). The present paper describes an investigation into some effects of anoxia on adult Musca domestica. A preliminary account of part of this work has been published (Heslo...

Twenty-seven species of calyptrate muscoids (Muscidae and Sarcophagidae) were collected from December 1993 to November 1994 with wind oriented traps (W.O.T.) baited with decomposing beef liver at the Rio de Janeiro Zoo. The most abundant species found were Musca domestica (57.84%), Peckia chrysostoma (28.16%), Ophyra aenescens (17.11%), Oxysarcodexia thornax (17.82%), Synthesiomyia nudiseta (13...

We present a probe-based, phase-referenced low coherence interferometer in which the reference field is provided by a fiber end reflection. A gradient-index microlens focuses light onto a sample and collects reflected light. We use the probe interferometer to measure surface profiles of the compound eye of a housefly (Musca domestica) and measure nanometer-scale vibrations in a test sample.

This paper summarizes the information on the occurrence of phenolic compounds in apple (Malus x domestica Borkh.) fruit and juice, with special reference to their health related properties. As phytochemical molecules belonging to polyphenols are numerous, we will focus on the main apples phenolic compounds with special reference to changes induced by apple cultivar, breeding approaches, fruit p...

Thirty six species of horse flies (Tabanidae) were previously known from Serbia (Europe). The present faunistic study of horse flies (Tabanidae) has resulted in the recording of the 4 new species Atylotus fulvus (Meigen, 1804); Tabanus miki Brauer in Brauer and Bergenstamm, 1880; Tabanus unifasciatus Loew, 1858; and Heptatoma pellucens (Fabricius, 1776), in the fauna of Serbia. The specimens Diptera: Musca dornestica and Ludlia sp. adapted to dark were offered two monochromatic lights of different wavelengths. Musca dornestica always preferred the light of a shorter wave out of two monochromatic equiquantum lights. Six color regions presumably qualitatively different were distinguished for this fly: violet-blue, blue, green, yellow-green, orange and red. Lucilia sp. e...

A nondestructive optical method for determining the total solids content (TSC) and soluble solids content (SSC) of fresh whole prune (Prunus domestica L. ‘French’) was investigated. The method, based upon near infrared spectrophotometric techniques, could predict the TSC (r /0. 98, SEP /0.80% FW) and SSC (r /0. 96, SEP / 1.02%) of prunes. A low cost ($250
