Casting metals and alloys makes most of the parts for vehicles. To shorten the time to market and get a satisfied quality new design approach have to be involved. New CAD based technologies are giving an opportunity to make molds faster and cheaper with a high quality than previously using classical methods. In this paper master mold design process including decision about materials is presente...

Essay The sum of the parts Graeme Mitchison Thirty years ago, Francis Crick, in his brilliant and combative little book Of Molecules and Men (Seattle: University of Washington; 1966), expounded what could be regarded as the biological reductionist's credo. The ultimate aim of a modern biologist, he said, should be to explain all biology in terms of physics and chemistry; in particular, it shoul...

Grasp densities are designed to be learned empirically. In principle, a robot attemps to grasp the object a large number of times using a wide variety of object-relative gripper poses. Each successful grasp constitutes a data point drawn from the underlying grasp density (1). In practice, for reasons of efficiency, attempted grasps should be chosen in an informed manner [1]. For resampling and ...

We have demonstrated neural networks can recognize parts by visual images. Input signals are gray scale photographs of objects consisting of some parts and output signals are their shapes. By training neural networks by a few set of images, without any supervision they become to be able to recognize the boundary between parts.

Stamping simulations usually make the plane stress simplifying assumption. However, this becomes less valid when material draws around features with radius to sheet thickness ratios less than 20. Pereira, Yan & Rolfe (Wear, Vol.265, p.1687 (2008)) predicted that out-of-plane stress equivalent to material yield can occur because a line contact forms briefly at the start of the draw process. The ...

We propose that not all such arguments are on a par. The first section of the paper distinguishes dialectically effective from dialectically ineffective arguments against metaphysical vagueness. The second section constructs an argument against metaphysical vagueness – specifically, an argument against objects that are indeterminate in what parts they have – which promises to be dialectically e...

This paper describes a manipulation primitive called toppling—knocking a part over. We derive the mechanical conditions for toppling and describe two applications to conveyor-based parts feeding. Toppling complements previous approaches to conveyor-plane feeding, allowing full three-dimensional parts feeding on a constant-speed conveyor.

The 2-Disjoint Connected Subgraphs problem asks if a given graph has two vertex-disjoint connected subgraphs containing prespecified sets of vertices. We show that this problem is NP-complete even if one of the sets has cardinality 2. The Longest Path Contractibility problem asks for the largest integer ` for which an input graph can be contracted to the path P` on ` vertices. We show that the ...

The sequence {B2}, {B4}, {B6}, ... is dense in the unit interval [0, 1], but it is not uniformly distributed [4]. Certain rational numbers appear with positive probability: 1/6 is most likely with probability 0.151..., 29/30 is next with probability 0.064... [5]. In fact, the limiting distribution F is piecewise linear with countably many jump discontinuities: F increases only when jumping (see...
